Men's Basketball Outlasts Dickinson, 79-72

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus Men's Basketball team opened the month of February by taking a 79-72 win over Dickinson on Saturday afternoon at Helfferich Hall in Centennial Conference action.
 
 
With the win, the Bears improved to 12-7 overall and 5-2 in Centennial Conference play. Meanwhile, the Red Devils fell to 6-13 overall and 1-6 in Centennial play behind their sixth straight loss.
 
 
Senior Trevor Wall led all scorers with a game-high 24 points to increase his 20+ point streak to six games and totaled five steals, four assists, plus four rebounds. Sophomore Luke Nieman recorded 20 points off the bench behind going 6-of-11 from the field and 4-of-9 from three-point range while junior Nick Nocito added 13 points, five assists, and three rebounds.
 
 
Ursinus gained the early advantage in the contest at 9-5 with 16:50 left in the first half and extended its lead out to 13-7 at the 13:06-mark. Wall scored 13 of the Bears first 16 points as he hit a three-pointer to give Ursinus a 16-10 lead at the 11:55-mark. Dickinson used an 8-2 burst to tie the game at 18 before the Bears responded with five straight points to go up 23-18 at the 7:53-mark. The Red Devils took their first lead since the opening minutes at 30-28 with 3:18 left in the first half following a 7-0 run and the teams traded baskets to close out the first half. Wall beat the buzzer with a three-pointer that gave Ursinus a 41-38 lead at the break.
 

Senior Marlin Wise opened the second half with a thunderous dunk which started a 6-0 run out of the gates that left Ursinus up 47-38 during the first 1:20. However, Dickinson continued to hang around and took its first lead of the second half at 58-55 following a 9-3 run with 10:26 left in regulation. Ursinus responded with seven unanswered points and grabbed a 62-58 at the 7:57-mark. A 6-1 run by Dickinson gave them a 64-63 lead at the 5:51-mark but the Bears struck back again and went up 68-67 with 4:22 left in regulation. With Dickinson up 69-68, Ursinus delivered a decisive 8-0 run that put them ahead for good at 76-69 with 1:04 left in regulation. Nieman scored the final six points of the run with a three-pointer and making all three free throws after being fouled beyond the arc.
 
 

The Bears shot 52.8 percent from the field (28-of-53) and 34.6 percent (9-of-26) from three-point range. Ursinus went 14-of-19 (73.7%) from the free throw line and held a slight 32-28 rebounding advantage. Meanwhile, the Red Devils shot 43.9 percent (25-of-57) from the field and 31 percent (9-of-29) from three-point range. Dickinson went 86.7 percent (13-of-15) from the free throw line and held a 16-8 second chance point advantage.
 

Ursinus returns to action on Wednesday, February 5th as they will travel to face Franklin & Marshall at 7:00 p.m.
