ORLANDO, Fla. – The Ursinus Women's Tennis team split its matches on its second day down in Florida on Tuesday. The Bears suffered a 6-1 loss to St. Scholastica to start the day before bouncing back with a 7-0 sweep of Covenant in the evening.
The Bears record now stands at 2-3 following the split while St. Scholastica moved to 6-3 overall and Covenant fell to 0-7
St. Scholastica 6, Ursinus 1
The Saints swept through the doubles matches to earn the first point of the match. Juniors
Kate Rubinkam and
Fiona Finnerty dropped a 6-1 match to Mishell Benitez and Maria Sosa at No. 3 doubles before sophomore
Morgan Coupe and first-year
Katie Yu suffered a 6-3 setback to Katia Bartels and Sophia Cosgrove at the No. 2 spot. Senior
Allie Armour and sophomore
Caroline Daly lost in a tough No. 1 doubles match 7-5 to Julia Maier and Paula Sendele. In singles, Daly was bested 4-6, 2-6 by Bartels at No. 2 singles and Yu dropped a 4-6, 5-7 at No. 3 singles by Benitez. Junior
Bella Vassalluzzo was downed 1-6, 1-6 by Sosa at the No. 5 spot and Coupe lost in a tiebreaker 6-4, 1-6, 4-10 to Cosgrove at the No. 4 position. Armour was also downed in a tiebreaker 3-6, 6-4, 7-10 by Maier at No. 1 singles and Rubinkam delivered the Bears lone point of the match with a 6-4, 7-5 triumph over Rewertz
Ursinus 7, Covenant 0
The Bears swept doubles to win in the first point of the match. Finnerty and Vassalluzzo started the match by winning 6-1 over Katie Cummings and Christina English at the No. 2 doubles spot. Sophomore
Julia Nitz and Rubinkam followed with a 6-3 win over Estee Verdery and Caroline Tisdale at the No. 3 spot while Yu and Coupe won 6-3 over Lauren Carr and Zoe Giuntoli. Finnerty swept past Tisdale 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 6 spot and Armour followed at No. 1 singles with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Carr. Rubinkam locked up the win for Ursinus with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Cummings at No. 5 singles and Yu bested Giuntoli 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 3 position. Daly defeated Verdery 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot and Coupe took down English 6-0, 6-4 at the No. 4 spot to close out the match.
The Bears are back in action on Thursday, March 13th as they will take on Loras at 8:00 a.m.
