Leonzi Highlights Women's Lacrosse Victory over Moravian

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Behind scoring a season-high 22 goals, the Ursinus College women's lacrosse team cruised to a 22-10 victory over Moravian University on Saturday afternoon at Patterson Field.

With the victory, Ursinus has won two straight, scoring 20 or more goals in each game, and improved to 3-4 on the season. Meanwhile, the Greyhounds fall to 2-4 to open the season. It marks the most goals scored in a game for the Bears since defeating Delaware Valley, 23-4, in March of last season.

Senior Maeve Leonzi paced the Bears' offense by tying a career-high with six goals, while classmate Julia McCann and junior Ashley Noto each added three goals apiece. Meanwhile, sophomore Dana DeSiato finished with a team-high five assists and currently leads the Centennial Conference with 18 assists this season. McCann added three ground balls, three caused turnovers, and six draw controls to push her season total to 36, which ranks second in the Centennial. Junior Meghan Vizian totaled three points behind two goals and one assist, while tying McCann for the team lead with six draw controls.

Ursinus scored the opening goal of the contest as DeSiato collected her first assist on a pass to Vizian cutting toward the cage to give Ursinus a 1-0 lead. Vizian received the pass just outside the crease and faked a shot before firing her shot past the Greyhounds' netminder to give the Bears the lead. Moravian responded by scoring three straight goals, leading to an Ursinus timeout at the 9:18-mark. Out of the timeout, sophomore Jaime Michaud forced a turnover, leading to a free-position opportunity at the 8:11-mark. Michaud sprinted toward the cage and delivered a low shot for the score to bring the Bears' deficit to 3-2. On the ensuing possession, Vizian assisted Noto on her first score of the contest to tie the game at three with 7:46 remaining in the first period. The Bears closed out the first period on a 3-2 run and held a 6-5 lead at the end of the opening quarter. Sophomore Ryann Buchner and senior Grace Lynch each scored goals for Ursinus on free-position opportunities.

The Bears carried the momentum into the second period as three straight goals increased their lead to 9-5 with 9:01 remaining in the first half. DeSiato assisted Michaud on the first score, while Leonzi, and McCann each added goals to close out the Bears' run. Moravian responded with a pair of goals to make the deficit 9-7, but a 3-1 run from the Bears gave Ursinus a 12-8 halftime lead. Leonzi and McCann each scored within a minute of each other, while DeSiato's first goal with 1:22 remaining closed out the first half.

Ursinus increased its advantage to 15-8 through the first five minutes of the second half as Vizian netted the first score, before Leonzi added back-to-back goals for the Bears. First-year goalie Allison McAnally stuffed a handful of scoring opportunities from the Greyhounds, while Noto and Leonzi combined for the final three goals of the period to give Ursinus a 18-9 advantage. For the third straight period, Ursinus opened with the first three goals and extended their advantage to 21-9 with 9:24 to play. After a goal from Moravian, sophomore Whitney Hershey added her second goal of the contest to give the Bears a 22-10 victory.

Ursinus held a 36-33 lead in shots, a 23-11 advantage in draw controls, while the Greyhounds tallied a 21-20 edge in ground balls. The Bears converted on 65% (13-of-20) of their clear attempts with Moravian totaling a clear percentage of 50% (6-of-12). In goal, junior Susie Miller earned the victory behind two saves in the first half, while McAnally shined in the second half, totaling six saves.

The Bears return to action on Wednesday, March 19th as they take on Alvernia University at 4 p.m.
