CAMDEN, N.J. – The Ursinus College baseball team were unable to get the offense rolling, falling 6-0, against Rutgers Camden on Wednesday evening at the Camden Athletics Complex.
With the loss, Ursinus falls to 13-7 overall and are set to open Centennial Conference play this Saturday in a doubleheader against Washington College. Meanwhile, the Scarlet Raptors improved to 13-5 on the season.
Junior
Mitchell Garber led the Bears offense, finishing 2-for-4 at the plate, while classmate
Tyler Dinan reached base with three walks. On the mound, senior
Mike Scheller and junior
Max Shilstone combined to pitch three shutout innings, without allowing a hit, and totaling four strikeouts.
Dinan was called on to pinch-hit in the Bears' first at-bat, earning a leadoff walk to put a baserunner on base in the first. Senior
Jordan Williams advanced Dinan into scoring position, reaching on a hit-by-pitch. Unfortunately, the Scarlet Raptors defense cut down both runners trying to swipe third base and Ursinus stranded two runners on base to close out the inning. Rutgers-Camden capitalized on the opportunity as they scored a run in the bottom of the first inning to gain a 1-0 advantage. Three singles and a two-out double pushed the first run of the game, before a fielders' choice allowed the Bears to stranded two runners on base.
In the second inning, Garber recorded his first base hit and junior
George Nestor reached on a walk for the Bears. The Scarlet Raptors used two strikeouts and caught their third runner trying to steal to escape the frame. In the bottom half of the inning, Camden increased their lead to 2-0, tallying a one-out RBI single. The Bears defense stepped up with one out, as a double play on a flyout ended the inning. On the play, sophomore centerfielder
Barritt Ross recorded the putout before cutting down a runner trying to advance to third for the double play.
Rutgers-Camden increased their lead to 4-0 in the third inning as three hits and a walk allowed two runners to score. In the Bears' chance in the fifth-inning, Nestor and Dinan each reached base with walks and just one out. Unfortunately, an infield ground out and pop out closed out the inning with Ursinus trailing 4-0. The Bears loaded the bases in the seventh inning, but came away empty handed and still faced a four-run deficit. Dinan and Williams led off by reaching on free passes, while Richter loaded the bases with his second hit-by-pitch with two outs. After a pitching change, a lineout by sophomore
Marco Maiuolo ended the inning. Rutgers-Camden added a run in each of the next two innings enroute to the 6-0 victory.
The Bears return to action on Friday, March 28th as they host Rosemont College with first pitch scheduled at 2 p.m.
