Women's Lacrosse Downed by Widener, 10-9

CHESTER, Pa. – The Ursinus College women's lacrosse team fell against Widener University, 10-9, on Wednesday evening at Dixon Field in non-conference action. 
 
 
The Pride scored twice over the final four minutes of play enroute to the comeback victory. With the defeat, Ursinus falls to 4-6 overall while the Pride improved to 4-6 on the season. Senior Maeve Leonzi, junior Ashley Noto, and sophomore Jaime Michaud each scored twice to lead the Bears' offense. Junior Meghan Vizian finished with a team-high three ground balls, with Michaud earning a team best two caused turnovers.
 
 
Widener scored the first two goals of the game on free-position opportunities to grab an early lead with 12:42 remaining in the opening period. Ursinus responded with their first score at the 11:45-mark as senior Grace Lynch made the score 2-1. Lon a free-position opportunity, Lynch sprinted towards the cage and beat the Pride's goalie for her 14th goal of the season. After the ensuing draw control, sophomore Dana DeSiato found Leonzi cutting towards the net to even the score at two apiece. Senior Julia McCann and Leonzi each netted goals to close out the first period to give Ursinus a 4-3 advantage.
 
 
Widener netted the first goal of the second period as a women-up opportunity evened the score at four a piece with 12:15 remaining in the first half. At the 9:31-mark, Ursinus responded on Noto's first score and 15th goal of the season to make the score 5-4. The Bears increased their lead to 7-4, capitalizing on goals by sophomore Ryann Buchner and Noto to stretch their lead to three with 5:45 left in the first half. On Buchner's goal, she received a pass outside the circle, beating her defender, and crossed the crease for her first goal of the game. Widener closed out the first half with a goal to make the score 7-5 at the halftime break.
 
 
The Pride opened the second half with the first two goals to tie the score at seven with 9:56 to play in the period. Both defenses stepped up and denied the opposing offenses, until a goal by the Pride with three seconds remaining in the period to give Widener an 8-7 advantage. Ursinus responded in the opening minutes of the final stanza as Michaud's goal evened the score at eight. After a Pride turnover, Michaud scooped up a groundball, sprinted the entire length of the field and beat the goalie to score the equalizer. Shortly after, Michaud netted the Bears final goal at the 9:57-mark to give Ursinus a 9-8 lead. Unfortunately, Widener scored two goals over the final four minutes of play to earn the 10-9 victory.  
 
 
Ursinus held a 24-21 edge in shots, a 12-11 advantage in ground balls, with Widener earning a 10-4 lead in caused turnovers. The Bears finished with a clear percentage of 72.2% (13-of-18), while Widener cleared 77.7% (14-of-18) of their opportunities. Widener's Regan Polacek earned the victory in goal behind 10 saves, with McAnally suffered the loss despite five saves.  
 
 
 
The Bears return to action on Saturday, March 29th as they host Dickinson College for a Centennial Conference matchup starting at 3 p.m.
