ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Behind a dominant offensive performance, the Ursinus Softball team swept past Elizabethtown in non-conference doubleheader action on Thursday afternoon.
With the wins, the Bears improved to 12-9 overall and the Blue Jays of the Landmark Conference fell to 2-12 overall.
Game 1: Ursinus 12, Elizabethtown 5
The Bears came red hot to start as they scored five runs off five hits and one error to gain the early advantage. Senior
Samantha Mallen led the game off with a single and advanced to third on a double from first-year
Anna Evanchik. Junior
Kayla Carr doubled in both and came around to score and first-year
Reagan Robinson followed with her first collegiate home run to make it 4-0. The Bears pushed across their fifth run on a wild pitch after an error kept the inning going. Ursinus added two more runs in the top of the second after Mallen and Evanchik opened the inning with back-to-back singles. Mallen came around to score on a passed ball and Robinson pushed Evanchik in with a sacrifice fly. The Blue Jays loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the second before the Bears escaped by allowing just one run from a groundout. Ursinus continued its offensive onslaught by adding three runs in the top of the third to make it 10-1. The Bears loaded the bases with one out and a deep groundball from Carr ended up getting two runs in due to the speed of junior
Megan Mills and Mallen. Robinson continued her big game by knocking in the third run of the inning with a single. Elizabethtown got three runs in the bottom of the fourth that made it 10-4 before an RBI single from Carr in the top of the fifth put Ursinus back up seven runs at 11-4. Robinson notched one more RBI in the top of the seventh when she singled in Evanchik from second base and the Bears closed out the game after the Blue Jays added one last run from a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh.
Game 2: Ursinus 8, Elizabethtown 0 (Five Innings)
Ursinus took the lead right off the jump once again but did it in a different fashion as they scored two runs in the top of the first without a single hit. Mallen walked and stole second base before coming around to score on a fielding error. Ursinus got its second run on a fielding error in the infield with two outs. The Bears held that advantage until adding a run from a groundout in the top of the fourth which started by senior
Rachel Hartman reaching by a fielding error. The Bears put the game away with five runs in the top of the fifth and retired the Blue Jays to enact the run rule. Mallen and Evanchik led the top of the fifth off with singles and Robinson drove them both in with a two-run single. Robinson then scored on a throwing error by the Blue Jays shortstop and the Bears added their final two runs from throwing errors by Elizabethtown, who finished the game with six errors as a team.
Robinson had an enormous day for the Bears by combing to go 4-of-7 from the plate with two runs scored, a home run, and a whopping 7 RBI's. Carr went 3-for-5 with five RBI's and a run scored in game one while Mallen went 4-for-5 with four runs scored in game one and combined for three stolen bases in the doubleheader. Evanchik combined to scored six runs in the doubleheader and went 3-for-6 between the two games with one stolen base. Junior
Christa Andrusiewicz earned the win in game one after allowing two earned runs on six hits in 6.1 innings and first-year
Lucy Wolf tallied the game two win after tossing four shutout innings with three strikeouts and two hits allowed.
The Bears return to action on Saturday, March 29th as they will open Centennial Conference play at McDaniel starting at 1:00 p.m.
