COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus Men's Lacrosse team overcame an early deficit to earn a pivotal 10-9 win over Haverford on a beautiful late March Saturday at Patterson Field in Centennial Conference action.
With the win, the Bears improved to 4-6 overall and 2-1 in Centennial Conference action as they complete a 2-0 week. Meanwhile, the Fords fell to 8-3 overall and 1-2 in Centennial action.
Haverford struck quick with two goals in a minute span to go up 2-0 at the 13:02-mark of the first quarter. Two more goals in a 10-second span at the 11:23-mark made it 4-0 and forced an early Ursinus timeout. Junior
Harry Sweitzer ended the run with a long-range goal at the 7:43-mark before the Fords answered with back-to-back goals to go up 6-1 at the 3:53-mark. However, Ursinus began to lock down the Fords and added a pair of goals late in the first quarter to make it 6-3 headed into the second. Sophomore
Jared Laskin notched the first tally in the run at the 3:04-mark and first-year
Daniel Rice scored with eight seconds left in the quarter. Laskin made it 6-4 at the 13:23-mark of the second quarter and junior
Nils Updale won the faceoff and scored on his own to suddenly make it a 6-5 game just six seconds later. Laskin added a third goal of the half at the 8:50-mark to tie the game at six which carried into halftime.
The Fords snapped a 24-minute scoreless stretch to regain the lead at 7-6 with 9:46 left to go in the third quarter, but senior
Christopher Pucciarelli answered a minute later to tie things back up at seven. Laskin tallied his fourth goal after senior
Ryan Dever led a fast break clear after causing a turnover to give Ursinus its first lead of the game at 8-7 with 5:54 remaining in the third quarter. Haverford tied the game 50 seconds later and the game went level at eight into the fourth quarter. Sweitzer gave the Bears a 9-8 lead with his second tally of the game at the 13:40-mark, but Haverford needed 52 seconds to tie the game once against nine. Laskin kept the back-and-forth battle going as he gave Ursinus a 10-9 lead at the 11:24-mark, which turned out being the eventual game-winning goal. Through clutch saves from first-year goalkeeper
Colin Daroch and strong defense, the Bears held Haverford without a goal for the final 12:48 of the game.
Haverford held a slight 46-45 advantage in total shots, but Ursinus held a 25-23 edge in shots on goal. The Fords held a 41-31 advantage in ground balls and won 12 of the 21 faceoffs. Daroch made 14 saves to earn the win for the Bears in the full 60 minutes and allowed single-digit goals for the third straight game. Haverford goalkeeper Jacob Abraham made 15 saves in the full 60 minutes and suffered the loss.
Laskin set a career high with five goals and Sweitzer tallied three points behind two goals and one assist. Pucciarelli, Rice, and first-year
Macky Bonner all posted two points apiece.
The Bears return to action on Friday, April 4th as they will host nationally-ranked Dickinson at 7:00 p.m.
