Women's Lacrosse Bested by No. 22 CNU

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College women's lacrosse team battled back in the second half but were unable to overcome an early deficit falling, 14-6 to No. 22 Christopher Newport University on Saturday afternoon at Patterson Field.
 

Junior Meghan Vizian led the Bears' offense with her third career hat trick totaling three goals, while classmate Ashley Noto added a goal and an assist. Sophomore Jaime Michaud led the team with two ground balls, while junior Abby Burkholder added a caused turnover. Vizian earned two draw controls to reach 100 for her career, tying her ninth all-time in program history with Alyssa Thren. 

 
Christopher Newport jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage, credited with eight shots through the first six minutes of play. Ursinus responded at the 8:32-mark as Noto assisted senior Maeve Leonzi for her team-leading eighth goal of the season. On the play, Noto found Lenzi cutting towards the cage, and her shot snuck past the Captains' netminder for the Bears' first score. Christopher Newport closed out the first period on a 2-0 run and held a 5-1 advantage heading into the second period. The visitors carried the momentum into the second stanza, outscoring Ursinus 7-0 in the period en route to a 12-1 halftime advantage.

 
Ursinus responded to start the second half, scoring two straight goals to cut the deficit to 13-3 with 7:53 remaining in the period. On the Bears first goal, sophomore Dana DeSiato found Vizian past her defender, and Vizian delivered a shot over the goalie's shoulder for her first goal of the contest. Next, Noto corralled a pass behind the cage, juked past her defender, and found the back of the net for her first goal at the 7:53-mark. The Bears closed out the remainder of the contest on a 3-1 run, but eventually fell 14-6 against the Captains.

 
In goal, junior Susie Miller suffered the loss, recording five saves over 28 minutes of action while CNU's Hadley Chadwick earned the victory with nine saves. The Captains held a 29-18 advantage in shots and a 12-9 edge in ground balls. Ursinus converted on 84.6% (11-of-13) of their clear attempts, while CNU finished with a clear percentage of 88.2% (15-of-17). CNU's Drew Stanley finished with a game-high four goals and two caused turnovers.
 
 
The Bears return to action on Wednesday, March 12, as they host University of Saint Joseph at noon from Patterson Field.
