ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Ursinus softball team kept its strong stretch of play going with a doubleheader sweep of Muhlenberg on Tuesday afternoon in Centennial Conference action.
With their second straight Centennial sweep, the Bears improved to 18-15 overall and 6-6 in Centennial Conference play. Meanwhile, the Mules fell to 16-14 overall and 4-4 in conference play.
Senior
Samantha Mallen set the Ursinus career program hits record in the bottom of the seventh in game two with her 192nd career hit. She passed the previous mark of 191 set by Sue Sobolewski in 2002 and now sits fourth all-time in Centennial Conference history. This comes off the heels of setting the program runs scored record on Sunday that was held by Jennie Moore with 122. Mallen is tied for seventh in Centennial history with 130 runs scored following today's doubleheader.
In game one, the Bears jumped right on the Mules with three runs on three hits in the top of the first to take the early lead. Mallen singled and stole second base to start things and came around to score on a double from first-year
Anna Evanchik in the next at-bat. After a pair of walks loaded the bases, junior
Keelie Hancock drew a bases loaded walk to make it 2-0 and junior
Riley Coneeny pushed across the third run with an infield single. Ursinus added three more runs in the top of the second off six hits to go up 6-0. Like the first, Mallen led the inning with a single and stole second base before coming around to score on a hit from Evanchik. Junior
Kayla Carr followed with a long two-run home run that made it 6-0. The onslaught continued in the third when Evanchik hit her first collegiate home run with Mallen on first base to make it 8-0 and Hancock hit a sacrifice fly later in the inning to make it 9-0. Ursinus capped things off with two more runs in the top of the fourth to extend their lead to 11-0. After a pair of walks to start the inning, the Bears had runners on second and third base with one out before Evanchik capped her big game with a single to score junior
Megan Mills. Carr scored Mallen with a groundout in the next at-bat. The Mules scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth before junior pitcher
Christa Andrusiewicz closed out the game.
Muhlenberg took the initial 2-0 lead with a home run in the bottom of the first before the Bears took the lead in the top of the third with three runs. Singles from senior
Rachel Hartman and Mallen plus a hit by pitch from Evanchik loaded the bases with no outs. Carr roped a single to centerfield to score them both and tie the game and first-year
Reagan Robinson scored Evanchik with a single to make it 3-2. The Bears held that advantage until the top of the sixth when the Bears scored two runs to extend their lead to 5-2. Ursinus loaded the bases with one out and a passed ball scored the first run of the inning. Robinson then scored the second run with a sacrifice fly in the next at-bat. Ursinus took advantage of a pair of Muhlenberg miscues in the top of the seventh to take a 6-2 lead and Mallen tallied her career record breaking hit with a two-out RBI single that extended the Ursinus advantage to 7-2. First-year pitcher
Lucy Wolf worked around a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh to complete the sweep and earn her eighth win of the season.
Mallen combined to go a sizzling 6-for-9 in the doubleheader with three hits in each game and scored six runs. She stole four bases with three coming in game one while tallying an RBI. Evanchik went a perfect 4-for-4 with a career-high five RBI's in game one, falling just a triple short of the cycle. Carr went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBI's in game one before adding a hit and two more RBI's in game two. Hancock tallied two RBI's in game one and Robinson posted a hit and two RBI's in game too. Coneeny went 2-for-3 with an RBI in game one as well. Andrusiewicz allowed two earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts and no walks in five innings of work in game one. Wolf allowed two earned runs on six hits as well in game two with three strikeouts and two walks.
The Bears return to action on Saturday, April 19th as they will host Washington College for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
