CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Behind stellar pitching and timely hitting, the Ursinus College baseball team earned a 9-4 victory over DeSales University on Saturday at Weiland Park.
With the win, Ursinus improved to 18-17 overall, while the Bulldogs dropped to .500 at 17-17. At the plate, sophomores
Brandon Sullivan and
Marco Maiuolo, senior
Jakob Cantor, and first-year
Matthew Callahan each recorded two hits. Sullivan extended his on-base streak to 38 games, while Callahan and Maiuolo each notched their first career multi-hit games. Cantor totaled three RBIs and has started to heat up, logging hits in 10 of his last 11 games.
On the mound, sophomore
Jack Garrity earned his first career victory, tossing three shutout innings while allowing just one hit. Sophomore

Brett Mutz combined for four scoreless innings of relief, striking out three.
Ursinus nearly broke through in the top of the second, tallying two walks and a single. First-year
Devin Fogg recorded a one-out single with two runners on, but an outfield assist and a lineout ended the Bears' scoring chance. Garrity cruised through his first two innings, retiring the first six Bulldogs he faced.
In the third, Ursinus broke through for three runs on two hits to take a 3-0 lead. Sullivan, senior

Mitchell Garber each drew two-out walks to load the bases. Maiuolo followed with a bases-clearing double to give the Bears the early cushion.
Garrity allowed a hit and a walk in the bottom of the third but escaped the jam with a flyout and a strikeout. Ursinus tacked on three more runs in the fourth to push its lead to 6-0. First-year
Nick Mirarchi led off with a walk, and Callahan and Sullivan followed with singles to load the bases. With no outs, Cantor drove in a run on a fielder's choice, and Richter followed with a two-run single to stretch the lead.
DeSales responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, but Ursinus got one back in the fifth to make it 7-3. Senior
Jordan Williams drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Mirarchi plated him with a sacrifice fly to center field. Couture entered in the fifth and stranded a runner in scoring position with a 6-4-3 double play. In the sixth, he allowed a leadoff single but responded with another double play and a strikeout to end the inning.
In the seventh, Mirarchi walked and advanced to third on Callahan's second hit of the day. After a pitching change, Cantor delivered a two-run single to extend the Bears' lead to 9-3. Mutz and sophomore
Barritt Ross closed out the final two innings, sealing the 9-4 win.
Ursinus returns to action Sunday, taking on Muhlenberg College at DeSales University. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
