Sullivan Swipes Centennial Record in Baseball's Season Finale

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus baseball team wrapped up its 2025 season by dropping a pair of games to No. 2 Johns Hopkins University on Sunday afternoon at Thomas Field.

Sophomore outfielder Brandon Sullivan highlighted the doubleheader by breaking the Centennial Conference single-season stolen base record with his 42nd of the season. He surpassed the previous mark of 41, set by Muhlenberg's Justin Graf in 2003. Sullivan extended his on-base streak to 42 games in Game 1 with two hits but was unable to reach base in Game 2, marking the first time he was held off base since April 20 of last season.

Seniors Andrew Richter, Jude Gilhool and Jordan Williams combined for four hits each in the twin bill, with Richter going 3-for-5 in Game 1 and Williams finishing 3-for-4 in the nightcap.

No. 2 Johns Hopkins 7, Ursinus 5

The Blue Jays struck first in the second inning, scoring two runs off three hits and a sacrifice fly. Ursinus responded in the bottom half as senior Jakob Cantor reached base with a one-out triple to left-center. First-year Matthew Callahan followed with an RBI groundout to cut the Bears' deficit to 2-1.

Johns Hopkins put two runners on in the fourth, but the Bears turned a 6-3 double play to escape the jam. Ursinus nearly tied the game in the bottom of the inning, but a strikeout and a lineout stranded two runners in scoring position. After two Blue Jay runs in the fifth, Ursinus answered with a pair of its own to make it 4-3. Sullivan led off with an infield single and advanced to second on a single by Richter. After a fielder's choice, Gilhool drove in a run with a double, and Cantor followed with a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to one.

The Blue Jays extended their lead to 7-3 in the seventh as three hits and a hit-by-pitch plated three runs. Ursinus responded again, scoring two runs off two hits and two errors to make it 7-5. Junior Mitchell Garber led off with a walk and moved into scoring position on a single by Gilhool. A 5-4-3 double play threatened the rally, but Williams brought in a run with an RBI single. A throwing error on a pickoff attempt allowed senior Peter Balos to reach and another run to score.

Sophomore Ben Couture entered in relief and retired six straight Blue Jays, keeping the Bears within two heading into the bottom of the ninth. Callahan and Williams both drew one-out walks. After a popout, junior Shane Beaver nearly tied the game with a line drive to right-center, but a diving catch by the Blue Jays' defender sealed the 7-5 loss.

No. 2 Johns Hopkins 6, Ursinus 2

The Blue Jays again struck first in the second inning, scoring two unearned runs on a sacrifice fly and a failed pickoff attempt. Hopkins increased its lead to 4-0 in the third, highlighted by a two-out, two-run home run. Ursinus got on the board in the bottom half, capitalizing on a defensive error and scoring on a double by sophomore Barritt Ross to make it 4-1.

Trailing 5-1 in the sixth, Richter singled and later scored on a double by Cantor to trim the deficit to 5-2. In the eighth, Ursinus loaded the bases with two outs, but a flyout stranded all three runners. The Bears were unable to mount a comeback and eventually fell 6-2.

Ursinus closes its 2025 campaign with its best record since finishing 25-16 in 2017.
