Baseball Sweeps McDaniel in Centennial Conference Doubleheader

WESTMINSTER, MD. – Behind two stellar performances, the Ursinus College baseball team swept McDaniel College in a Centennial Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Preston Field.

The Bears won 9-2 in game one and completed the sweep with a 10-5 victory in the nightcap. With the sweep, Ursinus recorded its third straight win, improving to 17-9 overall, and 4-2 in Centennial Conference action. Meanwhile, McDaniel fell to 12-14-1 on the season and 3-3 in conference play.

The victory marked the most wins for the Bears since finishing 18-18 in the 2019 season. With 13 games remaining, Ursinus looks to surpass the 25-16 mark from the 2017 season, which saw the Bears reach the Centennial Conference Championship final.

Ursinus' lineup was led by senior Jordan Williams in game one, who finished 4-for-5 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored. Junior catcher George Nestor added three hits and four RBIs, including his first career home run, to lift Ursinus to the victory. His three hits and four RBIs marked a career-best performance, while Williams' four base hits were his most in a single game. In the nightcap, eight of the nine starters recorded an RBI, with every starter collecting at least one hit.

Game One: Ursinus 9, McDaniel 2

Ursinus nearly scored a run in the first inning as sophomore Brandon Sullivan walked, stole second, and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. However, back-to-back strikeouts by the Bears kept the score tied at zero. Junior starting pitcher Dan Bass allowed a leadoff double in the bottom of the first but recorded a strikeout, groundout, and fly out to strand a runner in scoring position.

The Bears broke through in the second inning, scoring four runs off three hits and three free passes to secure a 4-0 lead. Senior Jude Gilhool led off with a double into right center and a walk by first-year Devin Fogg put two runners on with one out. Nestor delivered for the Bears, launching a three-run homerun to left field to push the Ursinus advantage to three. Senior Jakob Cantor and Sullivan followed by reaching on free passes, while a single to left field by Williams scored Cantor to push the Bears' lead to four.

Ursinus added a run in the third inning as Nestor recorded his fourth RBI of the day, a single to right center scoring Gilhool to make the score 5-0. Bass continued to keep the Green Terror offense off-balance, allowing just one hit through the first three innings. In the bottom of the fourth, McDaniel put two runners on base, but the Bears defense picked off a runner to strand two runners and kept the lead at five. The Green Terror added its first run in the fifth inning as two singles led to a sacrifice fly to make the score 5-1.

Ursinus responded by adding an insurance run in the sixth and three runs in the seventh inning to stretch its lead to 9-1. Williams and senior Andrew Richter each added RBI singles in the frame, allowing three runs to cross the plate for the Bears. Sophomore Nick Crocona relieved Bass on the mound in the seventh and recorded the final nine outs to give Ursinus the victory and his first career save. Bass (3-3) earned the win on the mound for the Bears, pitching six innings and allowing five hits and one earned run, while striking out three batters. It is the fourth time this season that Bass has pitched at least six innings and allowed three runs or less for the Bears.

Game Two: Ursinus 10, McDaniel 5

McDaniel scored the first run of the game in the first inning as a leadoff double led to a sacrifice fly with one out. Senior pitcher Kieran Hollander stranded a runner on base as a flyout ended the first frame. Ursinus answered in the third inning, scoring two runs off two hits to regain a 2-1 advantage. Cantor led off with a walk and bunt single by Sullivan put two runners on with no outs. A flyout and a strikeout threatened the Bears' opportunity, but a double down the left field line by senior Peter Balos scored two runners to give Ursinus a one-run lead.

In the third, Hollander allowed a leadoff walk but settled in by recording a strikeout and a 6-4-3 double play to retire the Green Terror. In the top of the fourth, Ursinus extended their lead to 3-1, scoring a run behind three walks. Sophomore Barritt Ross and Fogg opened the inning by reaching on walks, while a sacrifice bunt by Nestor advanced both runners into scoring position. Cantor came through for the Bears with an RBI ground out to push the Bears' lead to two.

McDaniel added a run in the bottom of the fourth, but Ursinus answered by scoring two runs in the fifth to extend its lead to 5-2. Ursinus capitalized on two walks, while a single by Ross, and a sacrifice fly by Fogg led to the two runs. The Green Terror responded by scoring an unearned run in the fifth and two runs in the seventh to tie the contest at five apiece. First-year pitcher Alex Grehawick stranded the go-ahead runner in scoring position by tallying a flyout to end the inning.

In the top of the eighth, Ross recorded a leadoff single and advanced into scoring position via a stolen base. After a groundout, Cantor collected his second RBI of the game, an infield single to give Ursinus a 6-5 lead. Grehawick cruised through the bottom of the eighth inning, collecting a lineout and strikeout to end the frame. The Bears offense broke through in the ninth, scoring four insurance runs to stretch its lead to 10-5. With one out and the bases loaded, Nestor laid down a suicide squeeze to score junior Kyle Rosenfeld and give Ursinus a 7-5 lead. Next, Sullivan and Williams each added an RBI on a walk and hit-by-pitch to push the Bears lead to 9-5. Ursinus netted their final run on an RBI single by Richter to extend its advantage to five. In the final frame, Grehawick (2-1) retired the Green Terror in order behind two strikeouts to earn the victory for the Bears.
