COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus Field Hockey team put together a dominant third quarter to pull away to defeat William Smith 4-1 at Snell Field on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action. The game was ultimately called after three quarters due to thunderstorms.
With the win the Bears improved to 2-1 overall while the Herrons fell to 2-2 on the season.
Junior
Rachel Fosbenner got the Bears the early 1-0 lead with a goal in the seventh minute that found its way through traffic. William Smith then tied the game up at one in the 13th minute on a big blast from the top of the circle off a penalty corner. The Herrons nearly took the lead in the 17th minute when a shot from the top of the circle off a corner went just wide of the cage. Ursinus was held to one shot in the second quarter and the game went to halftime tied at one.
Ursinus overwhelmed the Herrons with three goals off eight shots in the third quarter and did not allow a single William Smith shot during that stretch. Junior
Marie Brainard scored off a penalty corner just 1:48 into the third quarter to put the Bears in front at 2-1 before senior
Lauren Sieczkowski followed less than two minutes later with a goal off a corner to make it 3-1. Junior
Kirsten Johnson capped the scoring with a second chance goal in the 36th minute to make it 4-1 and played a hand in three of the four Ursinus goals. Lightning and an ensuing thunderstorm initially delayed the start of the fourth quarter for 29 minutes before the rest of the game was called.
The Bears held a 13-6 advantage in shots behind their dominant third quarter and a 10-3 edge in shots on goal. Ursinus also had a 7-3 advantage in penalty corners after getting five in the third quarter. Senior goalkeeper
Adriana Palladinetti earned the win after making two saves in 45 minutes while Baker Jeremiah suffered the loss for the Herrons with six saves in 40:17. Johnson totaled four points behind a goal and two assists while Brainard, Sieczkowski, and Fosbenner all tallied a goal.
Ursinus returns to action on Wednesday, September 10th as they will host DeSales at 7:00 p.m.
