Women's Hoops Downed at Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Ursinus women's basketball team was upended by Gettysburg College, 73-44, on Saturday afternoon inside Bream Gymnasium.
 

With the loss, Ursinus falls to 10-6 overall and 4-2 in Centennial Conference play. Meanwhile, the Bullets improved to 11-5 on the season and 4-1 in conference action. First-year Anna Chimento led the Bears' offense with a career-high 15 points and added two rebounds. Senior guard Ava Possenti chipped in seven points and tied a season high with 10 steals.
 

The Bears' defense tallied a pair of steals to open the contest but was unable to capitalize offensively. Gettysburg jumped out to a 5-0 lead before senior Madison Smith recorded the Bears' first basket at the 5:28 mark off an assist from Possenti. The Bullets used an 8-3 run to take a 13-5 lead, until a layup by junior Erin Glanz cut the Ursinus deficit to six with 1:18 remaining in the quarter. After a Gettysburg basket closed out the first, the Bullets scored four straight points in the second quarter to extend their advantage to 19-7.
 

Possenti connected on a 3-pointer to cut the lead to nine, but an 8-2 Gettysburg run increased the margin to 27-12 with 5:19 to play in the first half. With the momentum, the Bullets closed the remainder of the half on an 11-0 run to take a 38-12 lead into the break. Gettysburg tallied the first two points of the second half at the free-throw line, while junior Emma Afflerbach answered with a layup off an assist from Smith. The Bullets used an 8-0 run to stretch their lead to 48-16 before Chimento converted consecutive layups for the Bears. Sophomore Delaney McCaffrey later connected on a 3-pointer to cap a 7-0 Ursinus run with 5:33 remaining in the quarter.

 
Gettysburg responded with back-to-back 3-pointers, while Chimento added a layup and jumper to make the score 54-25. The Bullets closed the third quarter on a 4-0 run and held a 58-27 lead heading into the final period. Both teams traded three-point plays to open the fourth quarter before a 9-2 run gave Gettysburg a 68-32 advantage with 6:32 to play. Ursinus closed the contest on an 11-5 run but ultimately fell, 77-40.
 

Ursinus shot 27.9% (17-of-61) from the field, 21.1% (4-of-19) from beyond the arc, and 66.7% (6-of-9) at the free-throw line. Gettysburg shot 43.4% (26-of-60) from the floor, 35.7% (5-of-14) from 3-point range, and 84.2% (16-of-19) at the line. Adeline Standish led the Bullets with 15 points, seven rebounds and two steals.
 

The Bears return to action Wednesday, January 21st, when they travel to Franklin & Marshall College for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
