CARLISLE, Pa. – The Ursinus women's basketball team battled throughout but ultimately fell, 62-43, on Saturday afternoon at Dickinson College.
With the loss, Ursinus drops to 12-8 overall and 6-4 in Centennial Conference play. Meanwhile, the Red Devils improved to 12-8 overall and 6-3 in conference action. Senior
Madison Smith led Ursinus with 14 points, four rebounds and three assists. Junior
Erin Glanz added nine points, while senior
Ava Possenti anchored the Bears' defense with four steals.
Dickinson seized momentum early, jumping out to a 7-2 lead before a basket by junior
Emma Afflerbach at the 7:10 mark of the first quarter. The Red Devils answered with seven straight points before Smith, Glanz and sophomore
Ruth O'Keeffe converted baskets to trim the Bears' deficit to 14-12. The teams combined for three 3-pointers over the final minute of play, with Dickinson holding a 20-15 advantage heading into the second period. The Red Devils continued their run in the second quarter, scoring seven straight points to extend the lead to 27-15 with 6:18 remaining in the first half. Both defenses held the opposition scoreless for the next two minutes until first-year
Anna Chimento converted a layup to cut the deficit to 10. Possenti and Chimento each added baskets to close the half, but Ursinus trailed 33-21 at the break.
Possenti recorded a steal and found Glanz for a layup to open the second half, but an 8-1 Dickinson run pushed the lead to 41-24 at the 7:47 mark. Ursinus responded with seven straight points to trim the margin to 41-31 with 5:35 left in the quarter. Smith scored five points during the stretch, highlighted by a Glanz 3-pointer. Dickinson closed the quarter on a 9-4 run to take a 50-35 lead into the final stanza. Both teams traded baskets to open the fourth quarter, with Smith and Glanz each converting layups for the Bears. Possenti connected on a layup with 4:42 remaining to cut the deficit to 13, but Dickinson closed the game on an 8-2 run to secure the 62-43 victory.
Ursinus shot 28.8% (17-of-59) from the field, 11.8% (2-of-17) from 3-point range and 63.6% (7-of-11) from the free throw line. Dickinson shot 42.6% (26-of-61) from the floor, 23.8% (5-of-21) from beyond the arc and 83.3% (5-of-6) at the stripe. Emma Lanes led the Red Devils with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Mia Chapman added 12 points and seven rebounds.
The Bears return to action Wednesday, February 4th, when they travel to Bryn Mawr College for a Centennial Conference matchup at 7 p.m.
