COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – A pair of second-half goals proved to be the difference as the Ursinus women's soccer team dropped a nonconference matchup, 2-0, against Widener University on Wednesday evening.
With the loss, Ursinus falls to 8-5-2 on the season, while the Pride improve to 8-6-1 overall.
The Bears recorded the game's opening shot on goal in the 19th minute as sophomore
Lily Ballard fired a shot from outside the box into the gloves of the Pride's goalie. On a counterattack, junior
Taylor Pezulich worked past two defenders and created a one-on-one opportunity, but her shot was deflected away, resulting in a corner kick for the Bears.
Ursinus maintained possession for the next two minutes before Pezulich launched another shot on target, but it went directly into the gloves of the Widener goalie to keep the contest scoreless. After the Bears' defense denied a Pride corner kick in the 25th minute, Ursinus closed out the first half with shots by Pezulich and junior
Kaleigh Evans but entered halftime tied at zero.
The Pride broke through in the 76th minute as Madelyn Fisher connected on a free kick from just outside the box to give Widener a 1-0 lead. Just five minutes later, in the 81st minute, a long through ball slipped past the Bears' defense and found Widener's Allison Gomez for an insurance goal, giving the Pride a two-goal lead. The Bears increased the pressure over the final eight minutes, with first-year forward
Alexis Whaley recording a shot on target, but they were unable to convert, resulting in the 2-0 defeat.
Ursinus held a 10-6 advantage in shots, a 7-3 edge in shots on goal and a 6-2 lead in corner kicks. Widener's Lindsay Price earned the victory in goal with a game-high seven saves, while first-year goalkeeper
Lexie Albaeck suffered the loss with one save.
The Bears return to action Wednesday, October 28, traveling to Franklin & Marshall College for a Centennial Conference matchup beginning at 4:30 p.m.
