LANCASTER, Pa. — Behind a pair of stellar defensive performances, Ursinus field hockey first-year goalie
Elise Martin was named the Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday morning.
Martin led the Bears to a pair of Centennial Conference overtime victories last week, posting a 0.44 goals-against average and an .889 save percentage. Against 10th-ranked Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday, Martin tied her career high with six saves to shut out the Diplomats and give Ursinus a 1-0 victory in double overtime. She added two saves Saturday against Gettysburg, helping Ursinus earn a 2-1 overtime victory. The Bears now have six overtime wins this season, including each of their last four Centennial Conference contests.
The Ridley Park, Pennsylvania, native has started every game for Ursinus this season and ranks fourth in the Centennial Conference in goals-against average (1.25) and fifth in shutouts with three. This marks the second time this season Martin has earned the conference's weekly honor and the third time a Bear has received the award this season, with senior
Marie Brainard earning Offensive Player of the Week honors September 15th.
The Bears return to action Wednesday, traveling to Muhlenberg College for a Centennial Conference matchup at 7 p.m.
