GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Ursinus women's basketball team battled throughout but fell 63-48 to Gettysburg College on Friday evening in the Centennial Conference semifinals.
Senior
Madison Smith led the Bears with 13 points and three rebounds, while junior
Colleen Blackman added 13 points off the bench, shooting 3-for-7 from beyond the arc. Senior
Ava Possenti contributed 10 points, five assists and six steals for Ursinus.
Gettysburg jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first three minutes before a free throw by Smith and a layup from first-year
Anna Chimento cut the deficit to 5-3 with 5:44 remaining in the opening quarter. The Bullets then connected on consecutive 3-pointers to spark a 12-0 run. A layup by junior
Emma Afflerbach closed the period with Ursinus trailing 17-5.
Both defenses held the opposing offenses scoreless for the first two minutes of the second quarter until a 6-0 Ursinus run trimmed the deficit to 17-11 with 7:10 remaining in the half. Possenti opened the run with a layup, followed by a Smith basket. Possenti later recorded a steal and converted a layup to bring the Bullets' lead to six. After a Gettysburg timeout, the Bullets responded with a 3-pointer en route to an 8-0 run, extending their lead to 25-11 with 5:10 left in the half.
Possenti halted the run with two free throws, and Blackman scored eight straight points to cut the deficit to 32-21 with 59 seconds remaining in the half. Gettysburg added a layup and a free throw to close the stanza and carried a 35-21 advantage into halftime.
The teams traded baskets to open the third quarter, as Smith hit a 3-pointer and Possenti added a layup to make it 40-26 at the 6:08 mark. Sophomore
Ruth O'Keeffe scored four consecutive points for Ursinus, and senior
Makenna Foder converted a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to 45-32 with 3:57 remaining in the quarter. Following a Gettysburg timeout, Blackman knocked down her third 3-pointer of the game, but an 8-0 Bullets run closed the quarter with Ursinus trailing 53-35.
Both defenses locked in to begin the fourth quarter, with Smith scoring the first points at the 7:14 mark on two free throws. Blackman and Chimento each added layups, but Gettysburg answered both times to extend the lead to 59-42 with 4:19 remaining. Smith and Possenti combined for five points down the stretch, but Ursinus ultimately fell 63-48.
The Bears shot 26.9% (14-for-52) from the field, 21.1% (4-for-19) from 3-point range and 76.2% (16-for-21) from the free throw line. Gettysburg shot 35.7% (25-for-70) from the floor, 33.3% (6-for-18) from beyond the arc and 77.8% (7-for-9) from the line. The Bullets held a 30-18 advantage in points in the paint and capitalized on 21 Ursinus turnovers for 25 points.
Olivia Jones led Gettysburg with 14 points off the bench, while Kimberly Hopkins added 13 points on 5-for-12 shooting.
Ursinus closes the 2025-26 season with a 16-11 overall record and a 9-6 mark in Centennial Conference play.
