Baseball Splits Doubleheader Versus DeSales

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College baseball team split a doubleheader against DeSales University on Saturday at Perkiomen Valley High School, winning Game 1, 9-2, before falling in the nightcap, 13-8.

With the split, Ursinus moves to 2-4 this season, while the Bulldogs improve to 4-3 overall. Sophomore Luke Kopec led Ursinus across the two contests, finishing 5-for-8 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Sophomore Matthew Callahan and junior Marco Maiuolo each added two hits in the opener, while first-year Brett Barrett collected three RBIs and his first collegiate home run in Game 2.

Game 1: Ursinus 9, DeSales 2

For the third straight game and fourth time this season, Ursinus scored in the first inning, plating two runs off three free passes and an extra-base hit. Junior Brandon Sullivan led off after being hit by a pitch, while Kopec followed with a walk. A balk and another hit batter loaded the bases with no outs. Barrett drove in the first run on a fielder's choice, and a double by Maiuolo gave Ursinus a 2-0 lead.

DeSales threatened in the third with two two-out singles, but junior Barritt Ross induced a groundout to end the inning. The Bulldogs tied the game in the fourth, using an extra-base hit, a walk and a sacrifice bunt to score two runs.

The game remained tied at 2 until the seventh, when Ursinus erupted for seven runs on seven hits to regain control. Sullivan and Kopec opened the inning with singles, and a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Isaac Gesford moved both runners into scoring position. Barrett followed with a single to center to score two runs. After Maiuolo's second double of the game, singles by Callahan and senior Shane Beaver, along with a fielder's choice from senior Kyle Rosenfeld, extended the lead to 7-2. Kopec capped the inning with a two-run double to push the advantage to 9-2.

On the mound, senior Max Shilstone and first-year Jamie O'Neill combined for 5 1/3 shutout innings in relief, allowing just two hits to secure the win.

Game 2: DeSales 13, Ursinus 8

The Bears retired the Bulldogs in order to open the nightcap and scored three runs in the bottom of the first to take an early lead. Sullivan reached on a walk and Kopec singled before a sacrifice bunt advanced both runners. Barrett then connected on a three-run home run — the first of his collegiate career — to put Ursinus ahead 3-0.

DeSales responded with four runs in the second on three walks and two hits to take a 4-3 lead. Ursinus tied the game in the third. Barrett doubled down the left-field line, and Beaver followed with an infield single. After a sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, Callahan drove in the tying run with a groundout to shortstop.

The Bulldogs added a two-run home run in the fifth and a two-run single in the sixth to build an 8-4 advantage. Ursinus answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth on four hits to trim the deficit to 8-5. Callahan, Rosenfeld, Kopec and Gesford each recorded hits in the inning, but consecutive strikeouts with the bases loaded ended the threat.

DeSales added two runs in the seventh to stretch the lead to 10-5. Ursinus countered with a run on an RBI single by senior Patrick Colins. Trailing 13-6 entering the ninth, Sullivan delivered a two-run single, but a flyout ended the game as Ursinus fell, 13-8.

The Bears return to action Wednesday, March 4th, hosting Rosemont College before welcoming The College of New Jersey on Thursday.
