COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus baseball team scored five runs over the final three innings en route to an 11-5 victory over Rosemont College on Wednesday afternoon in the Bears' home opener.
With the victory, Ursinus improves to 7-4 on the season and has now won five straight contests. Meanwhile, the Ravens fall to 3-6 to start the season.
Sophomore shortstop
Matthew Callahan led the Bears' offense, finishing 5-for-5 at the plate and tying his season high with three RBIs. It marks his sixth game this season with two or more hits and his second straight contest with at least three RBIs and three runs scored. First-year
Brett Barrett added two hits and two RBIs, while junior
Brandon Sullivan scored two runs and drove in two RBIs.
Sophomore
Zach Cherrup earned his first victory of the season on the mound, pitching two innings while allowing two earned runs. Junior

Alex Grehawick combined for three shutout innings in relief, allowing just two hits and striking out one batter apiece.
Rosemont tallied the first two runs of the contest, drawing a leadoff walk before hitting a two-run home run to grab an early advantage in the top of the first inning. Barrett received the start on the mound for Ursinus and settled in by striking out a pair of Ravens to close out the frame. In the bottom half of the inning, Callahan collected his first of five base hits with a single to left field before advancing to third base on a stolen base and a throwing error. Sophomore
Luke Kopec then lifted a fly ball into right-center field for a sacrifice fly to score Callahan and cut the Bears' deficit to one.
The Bears' offense broke through in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs on three hits to regain a 4-2 advantage. Senior
Patrick Collins opened with a single to left field and advanced into scoring position after Sullivan drew a five-pitch walk. Callahan executed a bunt single to load the bases with no outs. A defensive error by the Ravens tied the contest at two, while senior
Shane Beaver added a sacrifice fly and a base hit by Barrett gave Ursinus a two-run cushion.
Ursinus increased its lead to 6-2 in the fourth inning, scoring two runs on three hits and two free passes. After two quick outs, Sullivan reached on a single before stealing second and third base. Kopec followed with an RBI single to right field, while a walk and a hit-by-pitch to sophomore
Isaac Gesford pushed across the final run and extended the Bears' lead to four.
Rosemont capitalized on a pair of hits to score two runs in the top of the fifth inning and added one in the sixth to cut the deficit to 6-5. However, in the seventh, first-year
Ryder Tootell reached on a walk and advanced to third on a throwing error by the Ravens catcher. With no outs, Sullivan delivered a sacrifice fly to right field to extend the Bears' lead to 7-5.
Ursinus carried the momentum into the eighth inning, scoring four runs on two hits, four walks, and an error to build an 11-5 lead. Gesford opened the inning with a one-out walk and advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt. Barrett then added his second RBI with a single to left field, and a pair of walks loaded the bases with two outs. After a pitching change, Sullivan drove in a run after being hit by a pitch, and Callahan capped the inning with a two-run double to give Ursinus an 11-5 lead.
Grehawick closed out the contest on the mound, striking out the first batter he faced before inducing a flyout and groundout to secure the 11-5 victory.
The Bears return to action on Saturday, March 14th, as they travel to Lexington, South Carolina, for a two-game series against Johnson & Wales University.
