Women's Lacrosse Upended by Christopher Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Ursinus women's lacrosse team fell on the road, 21-4, to Christopher Newport University on Saturday afternoon at Jennings Stadium.

With the loss, Ursinus drops to 4-3 on the season, while the Captains improve to 6-1 overall. Seniors Meghan Vizian and Skyler Bogdan, junior Ryann Buchner, and sophomore Devin Buggy each scored a goal for the Bears. Junior Jaime Michaud led the Ursinus defense with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

The Captains jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead through the first five minutes, capitalizing on a free-position opportunity and strong play within the draw circle. Both defenses held the opposition off the scoreboard for the next seven minutes until a Christopher Newport goal with 3:35 remaining in the period. After an Ursinus timeout, CNU increased its lead to six with consecutive goals before Vizian found the back of the net to cut the deficit to 6-1.

On the play, junior Dana DeSiato corralled a loose ball before finding Vizian for her fifth goal of the season with 2:16 left in the period. Senior defender Abby Burkholder forced a turnover on the ensuing possession, allowing Bogdan to score with 25 seconds remaining. However, a CNU goal with nine seconds left gave the Captains a 7-2 lead entering the second period.

CNU carried the momentum into the second quarter, scoring four straight goals to extend its lead to 11-2 with 11:52 remaining in the first half. Buchner answered for the Bears with a free-position goal at the 4:59 mark for her sixth goal of the season. On the play, Buchner took two steps toward the cage before firing a shot between the goalkeeper's legs for the score.

With under 15 seconds remaining in the half, Bogdan found Buggy cutting toward the cage. After a spin move, Buggy fired a bouncing shot past the CNU goalkeeper for the goal, but Ursinus still faced a 12-4 halftime deficit. The Captains responded in the second half, outscoring Ursinus 9-0 over the final two periods en route to the 21-4 victory.

Christopher Newport held a 36-13 advantage in shots, a 16-10 edge in draw controls and a 16-9 lead in ground balls. The Captains converted 77.8% (7 of 9) of their free-position opportunities and 93.7% (15 of 16) of their clear attempts. Ursinus finished with a 53.3% clear percentage (8 of 15) and converted 50% (1 of 2) of its free-position shots.

CNU's Faith O'Connor led the Captains with six goals on 10 shots and added three draw controls.

The Bears return to action Tuesday, March 17, when they travel to Hilton Head, South Carolina, for a nonconference matchup against Worcester State at 9:30 a.m.
