MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – An all-around effort led the Ursinus baseball team to its 11th straight win with a 2-1 victory over The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) on Thursday morning at the Ripken Baseball Complex.
With the victory, Ursinus wrapped up its spring training trip in South Carolina with a perfect 6-0 mark and improved to 13-4 on the season. The win gave Ursinus the season sweep over the Lions after previously defeating TCNJ, 9-8, on March 5th in New Jersey. With the loss, TCNJ fell to 7-10 overall.
The Bears were led by sophomore
Chase Martin on the mound, as he pitched six shutout innings, striking out seven and allowing just two hits. Martin picked up his second win of the season, while junior
Barritt Ross collected his first save, tossing the final two innings to preserve the lead.
Sophomore
Matthew Callahan tallied his eighth multi-hit game of the season, finishing 2-for-3, while junior
Marco Maiuolo also added two hits and recorded the game-winning RBI. Junior
Brandon Sullivan scored a run in his eighth straight game, while sophomore
Luke Kopec added a hit and RBI for the Bears.
Ursinus threatened in its opening at-bat as Callahan led off with an infield single. A fielder's choice and a walk put runners on first and second with two outs. Kopec then stole third, but a flyout stranded both runners.
On the mound, Martin retired five of the first six batters he faced, with a two-out walk in the second inning marking the only blemish. He responded with his second strikeout of the game and worked around a leadoff walk in the third to keep the contest scoreless.
In the bottom of the third, Sullivan led off with a single to right field and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. After stealing third, he crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Kopec to give Ursinus a 1-0 lead. Martin continued to deal, striking out two batters in both the fourth and fifth innings to maintain the one-run advantage.
Senior
George Nestor and Callahan each recorded hits in the bottom of the fifth, but a groundout stranded two runners, keeping the lead at one. In his final inning of work, Martin worked around a one-out single in the sixth before inducing a groundout and flyout to complete six shutout innings.
The Bears added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, capitalizing on three hits to extend the lead to 2-0. Senior
Shane Beaver led off with an infield single, and after a fielder's choice, a single by sophomore
Isaac Gesford put two runners on with one out. Maiuolo then delivered an RBI single to right field to give Ursinus the two-run cushion.
TCNJ responded in the seventh with a run on a one-out single, but senior
Brett Mutz stranded two runners on base by inducing a foul out and groundout to escape the jam. Ross took over in the eighth and worked around a baserunner, recording a flyout, and strikeout to end the inning.
In the ninth, TCNJ put the tying run in scoring position with a two-out hit-by-pitch followed a single. The Lions added another infield single, but the Bears cut down the tying run at the plate to secure the 2-1 victory.
Ursinus returns to action Sunday, March 22, traveling to Stevenson University. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
