COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College baseball team dropped a 22-2 home contest to No. 7 Salisbury University on Wednesday afternoon at Thomas Field.
The loss drops the Bears to 13-6 overall entering conference play, while the Seagulls improved to 15-5 on the season. Sophomores
Matthew Callahan and
Isaac Gesford led the Ursinus offense with one hit apiece, while junior
Brandon Sullivan and first-year
Brett Barrett each scored a run.
Ursinus plated the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning, capitalizing on two free passes to take a 1-0 lead. Sullivan opened the inning with a walk before moving into scoring position on his team-leading 13th stolen base of the season. After Callahan was hit by a pitch, sophomore
Luke Kopec lined out to center field to advance Sullivan to third. Senior
Shane Beaver then executed a sacrifice bunt up the first-base line to score Sullivan before a strikeout ended the inning.
The Seagulls responded in the second inning with two runs on a double down the right-field line to take a 2-1 lead. Both pitching staffs settled in as the next nine batters were retired before Salisbury broke through with four runs on three hits in the fourth inning to extend its lead to 6-1. The Bears answered in the bottom half, as Gesford delivered a two-out double to left-center field, scoring Barrett from first to cut the deficit to 6-2.
However, Salisbury added four combined runs in the fifth and sixth innings before erupting for 12 runs in the seventh to secure the 22-2 victory. Salisbury's Aidan Brinsfield earned the win, tossing six innings while allowing two hits and striking out four. Senior
