SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Ursinus women's lacrosse team fell 10-9 in overtime at Swarthmore College on Wednesday evening in the fifth annual Anita Deasey Memorial Cup.
With the loss, Ursinus falls to 7-7 on the season and 1-4 in Centennial Conference action. Meanwhile, the Garnet improved to 12-2 overall and 5-1 in conference play. The win marks Swarthmore's first victory in the series since a 15-11 decision in March 2019.
Ursinus and Swarthmore both honored Ursinus alumna Anita Deasey '75, a former assistant coach for both programs who was remembered as a mentor, teammate and friend. Prior to the contest, the teams recognized Deasey's passion for high achievement, love of competition, integrity in fair play and enthusiasm for the game.
Senior
Ashley Noto paced the Bears offense with a team-high four goals, increasing her team-leading total to 35 this season. Junior
Jaime Michaud added three goals, while classmate
Dana DeSiato recorded a team-high three assists. Defensively, senior
Sophia Curtis, along with juniors
Cait Michalowski and
Ryann Buchner, each recorded three caused turnovers.
Ursinus grabbed momentum early, scoring four straight goals to take a 5-2 lead into the second quarter. DeSiato first assisted Michaud on a scoring play before first-year
Gabrielle Eaise converted a free-position attempt to put Ursinus ahead by two with 8:59 remaining. After a Swarthmore timeout and a green card on the Garnet, Ursinus capitalized at the 7:09 mark as DeSiato found Noto for her first goal of the game to extend the lead to three. Senior
Skyler Bogdan assisted Noto on her second goal with 5:54 remaining before Swarthmore closed the quarter on a 3-1 run to cut the deficit to 5-2.
The Bears recorded the first six shots of the second quarter, but Swarthmore scored at the 9:57 mark to cut the deficit to 5-4. The Garnet forced a pair of turnovers and added another goal to tie the game before Michaud responded with 5:24 remaining in the half to give Ursinus a 6-5 lead. On a woman-up opportunity, Bogdan found Michaud cutting to the cage, and her shot found the back of the net for her second goal of the game. Swarthmore scored the final goal of the first half on a free-position attempt, sending the game into halftime tied at six.
The third quarter turned into a defensive battle, with each team scoring once to enter the fourth tied at seven. Swarthmore struck first at the 9:52 mark, capitalizing on a Bears turnover to take a 7-6 lead. Ursinus answered quickly, as Noto scored with 8:55 remaining for her third goal to tie the game. The Bears defense forced three turnovers and held Swarthmore to two shots over the remainder of the quarter to keep the score even.
Swarthmore extended its lead to 9-7 with 9:27 remaining in the final period, scoring consecutive goals to take a two-goal advantage. Ursinus answered with two goals in less than a minute to tie the game at nine with 1:26 remaining. Buchner assisted Noto at the 2:06 mark before Michaud scored with 1:26 left to force overtime. Swarthmore took the final three shots of regulation, but the Bears defense held firm to keep the game tied. Ursinus won the opening draw control in overtime, but Swarthmore scored the game-winner with 3:05 remaining to secure the 10-9 victory.
The Bears held a 33-23 advantage in shots, a 21-16 edge in shots on goal and a 12-9 lead in draw controls. Swarthmore's Brooke Carrier earned the win with 13 saves, while first-year
Addi Guthrie-Pimpinella made seven saves in the loss.
Ursinus returns to action on Saturday, April 18, hosting Muhlenberg College for Senior Day at noon.
