Late Rally Dooms Baseball at Haverford

HAVERFORD, Pa. — A slow start Friday afternoon doomed the Ursinus College baseball team in a 7-1 loss at Haverford College in Centennial Conference action.

With the loss, Ursinus falls to 18-13 overall and 5-7 in conference play. Meanwhile, the Fords salvaged a split of the season series and improved to 11-19 overall and 5-7 in conference action.

First-year Brett Barrett and senior Kyle Rosenfeld led the Bears' lineup with two hits apiece. Senior Dan Bass went seven innings for Ursinus, allowing four hits and three earned runs while striking out seven batters.

The Bears nearly broke through in the top of the second inning, recording two hits in the frame. Barrett reached on a throwing error to lead off, and a single by sophomore Isaac Gesford put two runners on with no outs. After a strikeout, Rosenfeld delivered an infield single to load the bases. However, Barrett was thrown out at home attempting to score on a wild pitch, and another strikeout ended the threat, stranding two runners in scoring position.

Haverford responded in the bottom half of the inning, using a leadoff home run to take a 1-0 lead. After a walk, Bass picked off a runner before recording a strikeout and a flyout to end the inning.

Haverford loaded the bases in the third on a two-out single and a pair of walks, but Bass escaped with a lineout to keep the deficit at one. In the fourth, Gesford drew a two-out walk and stole second but was left in scoring position after a strikeout ended the inning.

Both starting pitchers kept the opposing offenses in check as the game moved into the bottom of the seventh with Ursinus still trailing, 1-0. Haverford added two insurance runs in the inning on a two-out single to extend its lead to 3-0.

The Fords broke the game open with four runs in the eighth. Ursinus scored its lone run in the ninth, as senior Brandon Sullivan, sophomore Luke Kopec and Barrett each recorded hits in the inning.

The Bears return to action Saturday, hosting Gettysburg College for Senior Day at Thomas Field. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
