Bass Guides Baseball past Swarthmore on the Road

SWARTHMORE, Pa. — The Ursinus College baseball team scored in each of the final four innings en route to a decisive 13-1 Centennial Conference victory over Swarthmore College on Friday afternoon at Clothier Field.

With the victory, Ursinus improved to 15-8 overall and 2-2 in conference play, while the Garnet fell to 17-6 overall and 2-2 in conference action.

Senior pitcher Dan Bass highlighted the contest by tossing his second consecutive complete game, going seven innings allowing three hits, one unearned run, and striking out six batters. He improved to 4-1 on the season, collected his third straight quality start, and has not allowed an earned run over his last 23 2/3 innings.

At the plate, senior Kyle Rosenfeld led the Bears, finishing 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored, while sophomore Luke Kopec added three hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Sophomore Matthew Callahan tallied two hits to raise his batting average to .435, which leads the team. First-year Brett Barrett and senior George Nestor each recorded a hit and an RBI.

Callahan led off the game with a one-out single to left field before advancing to scoring position with his seventh stolen base of the season. After a groundout moved Callahan to third, another groundout ended the inning with two runners stranded.

The Garnet answered in the bottom of the first, capitalizing on two walks, a hit, and a passed ball to plate an unearned run and take a 1-0 lead. Bass stranded a runner in scoring position with a strikeout to keep the deficit at one.

Ursinus responded in the second inning, scoring two runs on one hit and a walk to take a 2-1 lead. Barrett led off with a walk, advanced to second on a stolen base and moved to third on a wild pitch. Next, Rosenfeld followed with an RBI single to center to tie the game. A sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch moved Rosenfeld to third before an RBI groundout by senior Mitchell Garber gave the Bears a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the second, Bass allowed a one-out walk, but a caught stealing and a groundout ended the threat. He carried that momentum into the third, striking out two batters and stranding a runner to keep Ursinus ahead by one.

The Bears added an insurance run in the fourth inning as Barrett led off with a double before Nestor doubled to extend the lead to 3-1. In the bottom half, Bass recorded his fourth and fifth strikeouts while retiring the side in order.

Ursinus broke through in the fifth, scoring three runs on one hit, three walks and a defensive error to extend the lead to 6-1. Callahan drew a leadoff walk before Kopec singled, and senior Shane Beaver was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. After a pitching change, Barrett walked to force in a run, and Rosenfeld reached on a fielder's choice to make it 5-1. A wild pitch brought in another run before a flyout ended the inning.

Bass retired the Garnet in order in the fifth, his second consecutive 1-2-3 inning, extending his streak to seven straight batters retired. The Berkeley Heights, New Jersey, native recorded two groundouts and a popout to maintain the lead.

Ursinus added a run in the sixth on a Kopec single before erupting for six runs in the seventh to take a 13-1 advantage. In the seventh, Kopec recorded an RBI single, while sophomore Isaac Gesford drew a bases-loaded walk. Ursinus then capitalized on a Swarthmore throwing error to score two runs before Rosenfeld added an RBI infield single.

Bass returned for the seventh and final inning, opening with his sixth strikeout. After allowing a single, he needed just four pitches to induce a flyout and a groundout to close out the victory.

The Bears return to action Saturday, April 4, when they host McDaniel College for a Centennial Conference doubleheader beginning at noon.
