COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - The Ursinus College men's soccer team took an early lead and never looked back, defeating William Paterson 2-0 at home on Tuesday evening.
 
The win improves the Bears to 3-3-1 overall on the year, while the Pioneers dropped to 2-4-1 on the season.
 
The Bears began the game with a strong start, as sophomore defender Jahsen Cole raced past the William Paterson defense to deliver an assist to first-year Eliot Bowen, who knocked it in for the goal. The goal in the fourth minute made it the second straight game Ursinus had scored in the opening 10 minutes. The goal marked Bowen's first of the season and third of his career.
 
Both teams played strong defense in response to the early goal, over the ensuing minutes. But in the 27th minute it was Ursinus who broke through again, as sophomore Sean McFadden rocketed in a goal off a strong Bears counterattack. On the play, Ursinus forced a turnover in the midfield, before a consecutive quick one touches by first-year JohnPaul Fernandez, and senior Matthew McFadden led to McFadden's third goal of the season which leads the team.
 
In the second half, both teams hankered down defensively. Ursinus recorded six shot attempts, and William Paterson tallied five, but none came close to scoring due to the teams' strong defenses. The game ended with Ursinus holding on to their two-goal lead and earning their third nonconference win of the year.
 
The Bears held a 10-8 shot advantage, along with a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal. Ursinus also held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Senior goalie Josiah Moore took the win with one save, collecting his seventh career shutout while William Paterson's goalie Luca Misko suffered the loss with three saves.
 
Ursinus will be back in action on Saturday, taking on McDaniel College at home at noon with William Patterson traveling to Rutgers-Camden on Saturday.
