COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The No. 13 Ursinus Field Hockey team broke open a scoreless tie in the second half to defeat Dickinson 2-0 in their Centennial Conference opener at the Snell Alumnae Field on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Bears improved to 7-1 overall and open Centennial play at 1-0. Meanwhile, the Red Devils fell to 3-5 overall and 0-1 in Centennial play.
Ursinus had a pair of chances from penalty corners go just wide in the opening minutes and Bears first-year goalkeeper
Elise Martin made a save in the seventh minute to keep the game scoreless. Neither team was able to get a shot on goal in the second quarter despite getting good looks on the net.
Ursinus wasted little time getting on the board in the second half when senior
Ava Mikulski scored in the 31
st minute to put the Bears in front at 1-0. Junior
Lauren Habakus sent a long pass from the left side outside the circle that cleared through two Red Devils defenders and found Mikulski in the right place at the right time, one-on-one with the Red Devils goalie. Following the goal, the Red Devils responded with their most extended pressure of the game by controlling play in the Bears end in the third quarter. Martin, however, stood strong and kept the Bears in front by making a pair of saves directly off penalty corners. Ursinus got a big rush in the 42
nd minute and it paid off when junior
Ava Wood redirected a blast into the circle from sophomore
Kylie Moore into the net to extend the Bears lead to 2-0. Ursinus did not allow a single Red Devils shot in the fourth quarter and preserved the shutout.
The Bears held a slight 13-9 shot advantage and a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. Ursinus also held a small 7-6 advantage in penalty corners as well. Martin earned her second shutout of the season after making four saves in the full 60 minutes while Red Devils goalkeeper Arden Cook made three saves in the full time.

th as they will travel to face No. 24 Swarthmore at 7:00 p.m.
