Ursinus College

CAMDEN, N.J. - The Ursinus men's soccer team earned their first win of the season Friday night, beating Rutgers-Camden, 2-0 at Camden Athletic Complex.
 
With the win, Ursinus improves to 1-1 on the season, after dropping their home opener against Lycoming College. Rutgers-Camden, on the other hand, falls to 1-1.
 
Both teams were aggressive early, with multiple attempts on goal in the opening minutes. It was Ursinus who was finally able to capitalize in the fourth minute, nevertheless, as first-year Joseph Kmetz knocked in his first career goal. Sophomore midfielder/defender Michael McCool and senior defender Mathias Stegner were credited with the assist.
 
Ursinus did well to protect their advantage as the first half went on, despite a physical game from both sides. The team held strong against multiple shot attempts by the Scarlet Knights, leading 1-0 at the half, and maintaining a 6-5 advantage in shots taken.
 
The second half was a defensive battle, with very few shots taken by either team. The Bears were able to break free, however, through another first-year rocketing in their first career goal. Forward Ryan O'Neill hit the back of the net in the 67th minute, giving Ursinus some cushion late.
 
The Scarlet Knights were able to tally some shot attempts late, but strong play by sophomore goalkeeper Jaden Ottley sealed a Bears shutout victory.
 
Ursinus held an 18-9 shot advantage, and an 8-1 advantage in shots on goal. They also had seven corner kicks, in comparison to Rutgers-Camden's three. Ottley earned the victory, with one save. Scarlet Knights goalie Aleksander Nycz took the loss, despite recording six saves.
 
The Bears will travel to Stockton, New Jersey on Saturday, September 5th, to take on Stockton University at 6:00 p.m. Rutgers-Camden take on Haverford College at home on September 5th at 7:00 p.m.
