Tyrell Howard-Franklin joined the Ursinus College women’s basketball staff in the fall of 2022.


Since coming to Ursinus, the Bears have showed steady improvement increasing their win total from nine in 2022 to 16 in 2024-25, clinching a third-place regular season finish within the Centennial Conference. The top-three finish was the highest regular season finish for the Bears since 1999. In 2024, Ursinus finished 15-12, earning a fifth-place seed in the Centennial Conference before advancing to the Centennial Conference Semi-finals. 


He came to Ursinus with more than ten years of coaching experience, including stops at The John Carroll School, as well as his alma mater Stevenson University, where he worked with both the men’s and women’s basketball programs. In addition, Howard -Franklin has extensive experience coaching AAU girls’ basketball serving as a head coach for both the Maryland Belles and the Maryland Basketball Club. During his years as a high school and AAU coach, Tyrell -Howard mentored 26 student athletes who went on to play NCAA women’s basketball.


Tyrell played college basketball at Stevenson University and following his playing career, he served as a student assistant for the Stevenson men’s programs before taking the position as graduate assistant for the women’s program. During his seven seasons with the Stevenson women’s program, the Mustangs made six consecutive post-season appearances and reached record breaking heights. Among the many achievements during those years, Stevenson enjoyed its best record in program history (24-4); won a MAC Conference title, made its first NCAA appearance, and notched the program’s first NCAA tournament win.


An outstanding teacher and on court coach, Tyrell-Howard has helped the UC women continue to make strides in the Centennial Conference in each of his seasons with the program. Tyrell -Howard assists with all areas of coaching including game planning, practice planning, scouting and recruiting.


He currently lives in Collegeville with wife Rachel Howard-Franklin, Ursinus’s head women’s lacrosse coach and his son, Ace.
