The Ursinus College Men's tennis team won their first match on Tuesday vs. King's College in Orlando, but suffered their first defeat as well in a loss to Cornerstone University in the night cap.
In the morning match, the Bears jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after doubles. Dave Rowe and
Mike Melchiorre led the charge with an 8-4 win at third doubles. Freshman duo
Tyler Arsenault and
Alex Elbogen followed suit with an 8-6 win at second doubles, while the first doubles team of
Evan Stutchin and
Matt Hope pulled out a close match with a 9-8 (7-4) victory.
In singles, Stutchin continued his impressive spring with a 6-0, 6-3 win in the first slot. Elbogen (fourth), Rowe (fifth) and Melchiorre (sixth) all also won in straight sets to round out the 7-2 victory.
In the evening match, the Bears (4-1) were swept in doubles, leaving themselves a 3-0 deficit heading into singles. Cornerstone, an NAIA team from Michigan, would not let the Bears produce any miraculous comebacks.
Ursinus did manage to split the 6 singles matches, leaving the Bears on the short end of a 6-3 defeat. Stutchin was again victorious in the first flight, winning 6-3, 6-2. It was also a good night for two Bear freshman,
Tyler Arsenault and
Dalton Lynch. Arsenault and Lynch
both won in straight sets in the fourth and sixth flights, respectively.
The Bears will hit the courts again on Thursday evening when they face Mt. St. Mary's (NY) in another spring break match up.
