Men's Tennis Digs Deep to Sweep Wittenberg

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Ursinus College men's tennis team locked up its second shutout in as many days on Tuesday evening, hitting Wittenberg with a 9-0 verdict. This time, the Bears had to dig a little deeper in a match containing quite a bit more drama than the score would indicate.

After dropping a mere ten singles games combined against Northwestern (Minn.) on Monday night, Ursinus (2-0) saw its unblemished streak threatened early in this one. After junior Chanton Phan and sophomore Peter Shields were first off the court with an 8-1 decision at third doubles, the Bears' top two pairings both had to fight off match points.

Sophomore Max Oberholtzer and Paul Vecchio outlasted Wittenberg's top tandem, 9-8, escaping with a 9-7 result in the match-deciding tiebreaker at first doubles. Seniors captains Tyler Arsenault and Dalton Lynch were also forced to overcome a match point before reeling off three unanswered games to post a 9-7 triumph at number two.

Singles was a more straightforward matter for the Bears, who took five of the six flights in straight sets. Vecchio cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 result at fifth singles, Oberholtzer was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at number one, and Phan rolled 6-1, 6-2 at number four.

Arsenault won 6-1, 7-5 on the second court, and junior Jordan Hodess left with a 7-5, 6-3 victory at number six in his season debut. That set the stage for a final piece of drama as the Tigers made one last challenge to the Bears' clean sheet. But Lynch shook off a 6-1 first-set defeat to take the second set, 6-4, before saving three match points to come out on top of a 14-12 marathon tiebreaker in the third set, preserving the shutout.

The Bears go for a third straight win on Wednesday against King's (Pa.)
