Men's Tennis Handles York

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Though the weather did not cooperate, the Ursinus College men's tennis team made the most of its home opener on Saturday, dispatching York (Pa.) 7-2 in non-conference action inside the Floy Lewis Bakes Center field house.

Junior Max Oberholtzer and sophomore Paul Vecchio got the Bears (5-1) off to a quick start in their quest to win a fifth consecutive match, rolling to an 8-2 victory over Sam Innerst and Devin Lehigh at first doubles. In their first match together, senior Jordan Hodess and freshman Devin Paulison collected an 8-3 win against Lukas Olson and Joel Hess at number three.

Ben Sentz and Sam Price got the Spartans (1-3) on the board with a 9-8 (5) thriller over senior Henry Burke and freshman Connor DeFaber-Schumacher at number two. There was not a single break of serve in the match, and Sentz and Price claimed the only point against the serving team to gain the slightest of edges in the tiebreaker.

Oberholtzer was dominant at number one singles, posting a 6-0, 6-0 whitewashing of Innerst. Vecchio was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Sentz at second singles, and Burke clinched the match for Ursinus with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph against Lehigh at number three. Burke's victory gave him an even 40 for his career, making him the 15th player in program history to attain that number.

Hodess took down Olson 6-1, 6-3 at number four, and Paulison improved to 3-0 in individual play with an 8-1 rout of Sam Price at number five. Hess edged sophomore Jake Lachowicz by an 8-6 final on the sixth singles court.

The men's tennis team is back home on Wednesday, March 22, against Cabrini.
