Box Score

WESTMINSTER, Md. – The Ursinus College men's tennis team kept its playoff chase right on track with a 9-0 Centennial Conference shutout at McDaniel on Saturday.

The Bears (10-5, 4-3) retained their grasp on fifth place in the conference standings and extended their run of double-digit win seasons to nine.

Sophomore Connor DeFaber-Schumacher and freshman Matt Fontanese got the Bears started with an 8-0 sweep at number three doubles against Tate Myers and Justin Arter, and freshman Mason Groff and senior Peter Shields were close behind with a matching shutout over Quinn Burker and Jimmy Wawrzynski on the second court.

Senior Max Oberholtzer and junior Paul Vecchio finished off the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win against Will Giles and Luke Shuck on the top court.

Ursinus conceded only nine games in singles play, where Oberholtzer was a 6-0, 6-0 winner against Giles at number one. Vecchio was similarly dominant in routing Burker 6-0, 6-1 on the third court. Groff posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Shuck, and the teams went to pro sets for the final three matches.

Junior Jake Lachowicz topped Arter by an 8-1 count at number six, DeFaber-Schumacher downed Wawrzynski 8-2 at number five, and Fontanese notched an 8-4 win opposite Myers at number five.

The men's tennis team hosts Washington College on Wednesday in what could serve as a de facto play-in match for the CC playoffs. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m.
