Men's Tennis Continues Road Warrior Ways

Box Score

YORK, Pa. – The Ursinus College men's tennis team is making a habit of bringing victories back with them from long road trips.

The Bears continued to develop their road warrior identity on Wednesday, overcoming a doubles deficit to edge York (Pa.), 5-4, for their third consecutive win – all away from home.

Sophomores Mason Groff and Matt Fontanese were double winners for Ursinus, which moved to within one game of .500 at 6-7 on the season. The second-year duo accounted for the visitors' lone doubles point, downing the Spartans' top team by an 8-4 line. The victory sparked the Bears to an early lead, but York claimed both second and third doubles to go into singles play armed with a 2-1 edge.

Senior Jake Lachowicz quickly pulled Ursinus even with a 6-1, 6-1 rout at fifth singles, his third consecutive individual triumph.

Groff's 6-2, 6-0 domination on the top court handed the Bears a 3-2 upper hand, and Fontanese doubled up the hosts with a 6-1, 6-3 decision at number three. Fontanese has won three matches in a row and ranks second to Lachowicz with eight singles victories on the year.

Freshman Simbarashe Kanjanda eliminated any drama with a 6-3, 6-3 win at fourth singles to clinch the final result before the Spartans took the second and sixth courts.

The Bears return to the Bailey Courts – and Centennial Conference play – to face Dickinson on Saturday.
