Men's Tennis Picks up First Win

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College men's tennis team grabbed its first victory of the spring on Saturday, handling an undermanned Washington College outfit, 7-2, on the Bailey Courts.

Freshmen Lars Jespersen and Will Oberholtzer were each double winners for the Bears (1-1, 1-1), who held a 3-0 lead before the match started thanks to the Shoremen having only four players.

After Mason Groff and Matt Fontanese cruised to an 8-2 rout at first doubles, the first-year partnership sealed the sweep with a hard-fought 8-5 result on the second court.

Three of the four contested singles matches went the distance, with the Shoremen (2-3, 1-1) claiming the top two courts. Groff lost 10-5 in his third-set super tiebreak at number one, while Fontanese staved off two match points before conceding an 11-9 battle at two.

Jespersen was a 6-1, 6-3 winner at number three singles, and Oberholtzer outlasted Christian Gruyon by a 10-8 count in a marathon final-set tiebreak at number four.

The Bears head to Gettysburg next Saturday for their first road match of the spring.
