Women's Soccer Dethrones King's

Box Score

Wilkes-Barre, Pa. – Freshman goalkeeper Mandy Carideo pitched her second career shutout and Alex Chalmers scored her first collegiate goal to lead the Ursinus College women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory against the King's College Monarchs on an overcast Wednesday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium in Wilkes-Barre.

The victory snapped a six-game stretch without a victory and gave Ursinus its second 1-0 clean sheet of the campaign.

Although the match seemed like it had the makings of a back-and-forth affair early on, the Bears (2-5-1) were applying the majority of the offensive pressure when an Izzy Allocco corner kick in the 14th minute resulted in Chalmer's goal. Allocco's delivery bounced off the chest of Taylor Beaumont and into the path of an on-rushing Chalmers, who knocked it in off the rebound. Allocco and Beaumont each earned an assist on the play; Beaumont's was her first of the year.

The Bears began to dominate the game in their offensive zone in the following minutes, but could not find the back of the net again in the first 45 minutes. Although the Bears spent a substantial amount of time on the attack, both teams tallied four shots in the first stanza. Chalmers had three of the Bears' shots in the half, with the other shot coming courtesy of first-year Carlie Shiller.

Chalmers had the most memorable of the Bears' second-half opportunities when she blasted a weakly defended shot inside the box, but it was saved by the Monarch keeper Tara Bender.

The Ursinus defense held strong throughout the game, with multiple black kits swarming to the ball each time an attack was launched by King's College in its white kits. Allocco had the attention of the King's broadcast team, as they praised her for her defensive play throughout the game. Allocco was seemingly everywhere in the Bears' strong performance, adding her aforementioned assist to a strong defensive outing.

Ursinus had a late scare in the final seconds when Kasey Denko had a golden undefended chance that she missed wide left, sealing the Monarchs' fate.

The Bears will see action next on Saturday at 6 p.m. in Collegeville, when they face off against Centennial Conference rival Washington College.
