COLLEGEVILLE, PA. – The Ursinus College women's soccer team was edged 1-0 in a hard-fought battle against Swarthmore in conference play on Wednesday evening.
With the loss, Ursinus falls to 4-4-4 on the season and 1-3-2 in Centennial Conference action, meanwhile the Garnet improve to 10-2-1 overall and 4-1-1 in conference play.
The Garnet earned the first opportunity of the evening as Abby Chang had her shot blocked by the Bears defense in the 4
th minute. Just two minutes later, Swarthmore's Alice Onyango-Opiyo created some space outside the box and fired a low left-footed shot on net. The senior's shot was denied by Bears' junior goalkeeper
Kaela Frenchman on a sliding attempt. The Bears defense continued the stellar play blocking two more Garnet shots early in the 15
th minute.
Ursinus started to regain some momentum and offensive pressure in the 18
th minute as
Izzy Allocco's free kick shot was saved by Nora Greer. Four minutes later, junior
Alex Chalmers earned a scoring opportunity, but her shot was saved by Greer as well. The Bears fired a trio of shots in the 35
th minute as
Emmy Sinnett and
Alicia Page both missed the net. Allocco followed up with a shot on goal, but Greer and the Garnet defense denied the opportunity. Ursinus closed out the final minute of the half with back-to-back shots as Sinnett and junior
Liv Morrow missed just wide of the post.
Heading into halftime with the score tied 0-0, Swarthmore held a slight 10-8 edge in shots and a 3-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities. The Garnet finally broke through in the 57
th minute, as Amelia Mounts lifted a curling shot towards the far post and snuck it past the Bears defense. Ursinus responded with a trio of shots in the 67
th minute as senior
Morgan Raley had her shot saved and first-year Adrianna Careless had back-to-back shots.
In the 74
th minute, junior
Zoe Moosbrugger nearly tied the game at one a piece as her header just missed hitting the crossbar. On a corner kick, Raley sent a low line drive into the box connecting with the head of the Bears defender. Moosbrugger's header sizzled high and over the net to keep the deficit at one with 15 minutes to play. Over the next ten minutes, each team battled in the midfield as each defense wouldn't allow a shot on net. The Bears final opportunity came in the 88
th minute as junior
Ciara Rago had her shot saved by Swarthmore's Greer in net.
The Garnet finished with a slight 16-14 advantage in shots and a 5-3 edge in corner kick opportunities. Swarthmore's Nora Greer earned the win in net collecting five saves, while Frenchman earned a game-high six saves.
The Bears will return to action on Saturday as they travel to Baltimore, Maryland for a Centennial Conference matchup with No. 4 Johns Hopkins at 4pm.
