COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus Field Hockey team was dealt a 3-2 setback by Swarthmore on a chilly Wednesday night at Snell Alumnae Field in Centennial Conference action.
With the loss, the Bears fall to 6-8 overall and 3-4 in Centennial play. Meanwhile, the Garnet improved to 9-5 overall and 4-3 in conference action.
Ursinus had the first chance of the game in the fifth minute when sophomore
Mary Lauren Franz had a shot kicked away. The Garnet stunned the Bears by scoring in the seventh minute to go up 1-0 after the first portion of the game was spent entirely in the Ursinus attacking end. The Bears turned back up the pressure minutes later and had three saved in a 30-second span. Ursinus was awarded a penalty stroke in the final minute of the first quarter after being tripped in the circle, but senior
Laura Rothschild had her shot saved by Garnet goalkeeper Cassandra Conklin.
The Bears then nearly tied the game in the 22nd minute when senior
Addie Plummer whipped a shot to the right that bounced off the post. Ursinus seemingly did tie the game 23 seconds later when senior
Jordan Moore blasted a ball into the net from a penalty corner, but the shot was deemed too high to wipe out the goal.
Swarthmore extended its lead to 2-0 seven minutes into the third quarter after a cross from Jackie Crowley was sent along the end line to an open Sophia Hitchingham. Ursinus had two shots saved just over a minute later following a corner attempt with one being stopped by a defender. The Bears were awarded a second penalty stroke a minute into the fourth quarter and this time first-year
Lauren Breisch beat Conklin on the right to cut the deficit to 2-1. Unfortunately for the Bears, the Garnet responded just under two minutes later with a goal following a penalty corner to go back up two at 3-1. Moore cut the deficit to 3-2 after collecting a rebound from a saved shot by Rothschild but did not record a shot for the rest of the game.
Ursinus held an 18-8 advantage in total shots and just a 10-7 edge in shots on goal. The Bears also held a sizable 12-5 edge in penalty corners as well. Ulsh made four saves in the full 60 minutes while Conklin turned away seven shots during the full duration of the game.
The Bears return to action on Saturday, October 22nd as they will host McDaniel for senior day at 12 p.m.
