COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – With Saturday normally being the busiest sports day of the week, the Ursinus Athletic Department will preview the upcoming weekend's slate of games. Let's look at the matchups for the weekend of 10/22.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 21st
Men's Soccer Preview – Ursinus (3-8-3, 0-6-1) at. No. 18 Franklin & Marshall (10-1-4, 6-0-1) – 7:00 p.m.
Bears Last Game – Ursinus 3, Muhlenberg 3 (10/19/22)
Junior midfielder
Tommy Mollis scored two goals as the Bears overcame a two-goal deficit at halftime earning a 3-3 draw against the Mules on Wednesday evening. Trailing 2-0,
Jack Schmidt sent a low cross into the box, finding Mollis for a header that was aimed perfectly towards the far post of the net for his first goal of the game.
After halftime, the Bears quickly answered with a goal in the opening minutes of the second half, as Mollis found
Luke Luehrs for his first goal of the season, cutting the deficit to one. On the counterattack, Mollis created space between the Mules defense and sent a cross into the box. The pass tipped off the gloves of Muhlenberg's goalkeeper and Luehrs shot snuck past the Mules defense.
In the 73
rd minute, Mollis tied the match at three a piece on his second goal of the contest. After a battle for a throw in on the far side of the field, a rebound found the junior midfielder who created space inside the box and sent an arching shot over the Mules defense and into the back of the net.
Last Meeting – Franklin & Marshall 1, Ursinus 0 (10/23/21)
The Bears were edged last season by the Diplomats at Patterson Field. Ursinus valiantly held strong with F&M despite being down a man for 85 minutes of the contest. Franklin & Marshall scored the decisive goal in the 50th minute.
Scouting the Diplomats - Scouting the Diplomats - Franklin & Marshall is coming off back-to-back 1-0 victories over Swarthmore and Haverford and their defense have allowed just one goal over the last four contests. Senior goalkeeper Sam Farrell will anchor the Diplomats back line and currently ranks top-five in the conference in saves (2
nd, 51), save percentage (3
rd, .823), and goals-against average (4
th, 0.79).
Women's Volleyball Preview – Ursinus (14-7, 2-5) vs. McDaniel (2-15, 1-6) – 7 p.m.
Bears Last Game – Swarthmore 3, Ursinus 0 (10/18/22)
The Bears were led by senior
Katie Cressman who finished with a game-high 14 kills (.464%) and two aces, while sophomore
Caroline Sherman added six kills. Senior
Luca Walborn collected a team-high six digs, while sophomore
Rachel Bernard tallied 11 assists. Cressman leads the Bears and sits near the top of the conference in kills (259) and kills per set (3.75), while Bernard ranks first in the conference with 0.81 service aces per set.
Last Matchup – Ursinus 3, McDaniel 2 (10/23/21)
Ursinus rallied from a 2-1 set deficit to defeat the Green Terror in five sets last season at Westminster. The offense led the way for the Bears in the matchup as they hit for .307 as a team and an astounding .783 in the fourth set to start the rally. Cressman (15),
Caroline Sherman (16), and
Haley Spotts (12) each finished with double digit kills.
Claire Worley and Bernard each finished with 21 assists, while
Emma Illovsky collected nine digs.
Scouting The Green Terror – McDaniel is coming off a straight set sweep of Bryn Mawr last Saturday and a 3-1 loss against Catholic University on Monday. The Green Terror are in the middle of a five-game stretch away from the Gill Center as they have a tri-match against Elizabethtown and Misericordia on Saturday. Junior Nia Roberts leads the team averaging 1.89 kills per set, while classmate Tatiana Hamilton holds a team-high 3.64 assists per set.

Field Hockey Preview - Ursinus (6-8, 3-4) vs. McDaniel (5-8, 1-6) – 12:00 p.m.
Bears Last Game – Swarthmore 3, Ursinus 2 – (10/19/22)
Ursinus had the first chance of the game in the fifth minute when sophomore
Mary Lauren Franz had a shot kicked away. The Garnet stunned the Bears by scoring in the seventh minute to go up 1-0 after the first portion of the game was spent entirely in the Ursinus attacking end. The Bears turned back up the pressure minutes later and had three saved in a 30-second span. Ursinus was awarded a penalty stroke in the final minute of the first quarter after being tripped in the circle, but senior
Laura Rothschild had her shot saved by Garnet goalkeeper Cassandra Conklin.
Swarthmore extended its lead to 2-0 seven minutes into the third quarter after a cross from Jackie Crowley was sent along the end line to an open Sophia Hitchingham. Ursinus had two shots saved just over a minute later following a corner attempt with one being stopped by a defender. The Bears were awarded a second penalty stroke a minute into the fourth quarter and this time first-year
Lauren Breisch beat Conklin on the right to cut the deficit to 2-1. Unfortunately for the Bears, the Garnet responded just under two minutes later with a goal following a penalty corner to go back up two at 3-1. Moore cut the deficit to 3-2 after collecting a rebound from a saved shot by Rothschild but did not record a shot for the rest of the game.
Last Matchup – Ursinus 2, McDaniel 0 - (10/23/21)
The Bears defeated McDaniel 2-0 on the road last season. Ursinus got on the board in the second quarter off a penalty stroke goal from
Laura Rothschild before adding an insurance goal in the fourth quarter from
Sarah Symes. The Bears defense stifled the Green Terror all game and did not allow a single shot nor penalty corner.
Senior Day - Prior to today's contest, the Bears will recognize its seven seniors as a part of Senior Day ceremonies. This senior class were members of the 2021 Bears team that qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2016 season. This group has played in a pair of Centennial Conference tournaments and seek of qualifying for a third one this season.
Scouting the Green Terror - The Green Terror are coming off a 5-1 setback to Bryn Mawr last Saturday afternoon. Dillan Williams leads the team with four goals and is tied for the team lead in points with eight alongside Yeseniah Ortiz. Goalkeeper Mikayla Smith ranks second in the Centennial Conference with 82 saves.

Liv Morrow and first-year
Sophia Lutz scored their first collegiate goals as the Ursinus College women's soccer team shutouts Penn State Abington 3-0 on Wednesday afternoon. The Bears finally broke through in the 22
nd minute, as Lutz split two Nittany Lions defenders and sent a pass to junior
Ciara Rago. She took a touch and settled the ball, before passing back to Lutz for a one-touch opportunity. Lutz's shot sailed past the Nittany Lions goalkeeper and into the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage.
The consistent pressure paid off in the 36
th minute when senior Izzy Alloco found Morrow for her first goal of the season. Allocco took on three Abington defenders and found Morrow inside the box and her touch snuck past the Nittany Lions defense for a 2-0 advantage. Just under four minutes later, a goal kick found junior
Alex Chalmers near the midfield. Chalmers switched fields sending a cross to sophomore
Olivia Losurdo who found Morrow once again for her second goal of the contest giving the Bears a 3-0 advantage heading into halftime. Morrow's second goal came from a one-touch as Losurdo was awarded her second assist of the season.
Stellar Defense – Junior goalkeeper
Kaela Frenchman and the Bears defense collected their seventh shutout of the season on Wednesday. Five of the seven shutouts have come on the road this season for Ursinus. Frenchman currently ranks top-five in the conference in saves (3
rd, 54), save percentage (2
nd, .871), goals against (3
rd, 8), and goals-against average (3
rd, 0.73).
Scouting the Diplomats – Franklin & Marshall has won their last two home matches defeating Haverford 3-0 on October 12 and Lebanon Valley on Wednesday evening 2-1. The Diplomats are dangerous on the offensive end as Sierra Brophy leads the conference in goals with 11, while senior Meg O'Callahan ranks third in the conference in assists with six. Brophy has scored in four consecutive matches including a hat-trick in the Diplomats win over Haverford. Goalkeeper Emma Nolan leads the Centennial Conference in goals-against (5), save percentage (.872), and goals-against average (0.42).
Men's/Women's Swimming Preview at Centennial Conference Quad Meet (Lancaster, Pa.) – Ursinus vs F&M, Swarthmore, and McDaniel – 11 a.m.
Diving in – The Bears begin their 2022-23 season with a Centennial Conference quad meet at Franklin & Marshall with Swarthmore, and McDaniel. Swarthmore was picked to finish first in the Centennial Conference coaches preseason poll, while the Diplomats landed in the third spot.
Men's Swimming – The Bears are coming of a 2021-22 season that saw them finish fourth at Centennial Conference Championships and completed the season with a 5-4 record and a 2-4 mark in the conference.
Senior
Ryan Carkhuff and sophomore
Jonah Kasznay look to build off a strong Centennial Conference Championships performance. Carkhuff led the way for the Bears earning a silver medal in the 50 freestyle (20.29) and a third-place finish in the 100 free with a time of 45.38. Carkhuff now currently owns the top times in school history in both events. Kasznay earned a second-place finish in the 400 IM and holds the school record with a time of 4:03.00.
Women's Swimming - The Bears look to build off a 2021-22 season that saw them finish fourth at Centennial Conference Championships and completed the season with a 7-3 record and a 4-3 mark in the conference. The Bears return last year's Centennial Conference Most Outstanding Rookie Performer in junior
Melissa Leonard. Leonard had a breakout sophomore season for the Bears earning gold last season at Conferences in the 200, 500, and 1650-yard Freestyle events. She also ranks second all-time in program history in the 500, 1000, and 1650 Freestyle.
