Football Earns 44-17 Win over Moravian on Homecoming

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Senior quarterback Jack Psenicska matched his own single game program record of five touchdown passes as the Ursinus football team rolled to a 44-17 win over Moravian on a beautiful Homecoming Saturday at Patterson Field in Centennial Conference play.

With the win, the Bears earned their second-straight win to improve to 5-2 overall and 4-2 in Centennial Conference play. Meanwhile, the Greyhounds fell to 2-5 overall and 2-4 in conference play. This was the final meeting between the two schools as Centennial Conference opponents as Moravian will be departing the conference for the newly formed Landmark Football Conference.

Psenicska methodically sliced up the Greyhound secondary during the whole game by going an efficient 24-of-28 for 284 yards with his five touchdown passes. He becomes the first Ursinus quarterback in program history to record multiple five-touchdown passing performances in his career, matching his own record set back against Alvernia in the 2021 season opener. The single game passing touchdown record is also shared by Nicholas Dye who threw five against Juniata in 2007. His efforts garnered him the Kenneth E. Walker award which is handed out annually to the top performing Bears football player during their homecoming contest.

Senior wide receiver Nick Schnaars paced the Bears wide receivers with a game-high 73 yards on three catches along with two touchdown receptions.  Senior Octavious Carter led all receivers in receptions with seven catches while gaining 57 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore Justin Collier caught one of Psenicska's touchdown passes, a 24-yard strike for his only reception of the game.

Junior Dawson Fresses made life difficult on the Greyhounds behind bruising runs and finished with a career-high 83 yards on 15 carries plus one touchdown. Fresses also snatched two passes for 17 yards and his first collegiate touchdown reception as well.

As they have made a habit of all season, the Bears made the most out of getting the ball to open the game by easily moving 75 yards on nine plays and went up 7-0 at the 11:03-mark after Psenicska hit Fresses on a screen pass from six yards out. Ursinus capitalized on Moravian inadvertently backing themselves up from a botched kickoff return by forcing a three-and-out plus starting their next drive at the Greyhounds 40 yard line. All it took was three plays and a 15-yard charge up the middle from Fresses to put the Bears up 14-0 with 8:07 left in the first quarter. Moravian seemed to get a huge break when Ursinus muffed a punt deep in their own territory, but the Bears defense stood tall and limited the Greyhounds to a field goal. Ursinus responded by putting together a 10-play 50 yard drive and Carter snatched a two-yard pass from Psenicska in the end zone to put the Bears up 21-3 at the 1:17-mark of the first quarter.

Ursinus stopped a lengthy Greyhound drive that made it as far as their own 48 yard line but were forced to punt on their next possession for the first time in the contest. Moravian took advantage of short field and a pair of Ursinus penalties to score a touchdown and cut the deficit down to 21-10 at the 5:26-mark of the second quarter. However, the Bears got things rolling once again on their next drive and Psenicska lofted a 25-yard touchdown pass to Schnaars over a pair of Greyhound defenders, extending their lead out to 28-10 with 3:20 left in the first half. A low snap off a Greyhound punt attempt then set the Bears up to cap off the first half with a 38-yard field goal from senior Dakota Wherrity to bring the score to 31-10.

The Bears forced a Greyhounds three-and-out to open the second half and used a 13-play 98 yard drive that ate up 6:39 of the clock to extend their lead to 38-10 after Psenicska found a wide open Schnaars for a 32-yard score. Moravian scored a touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter to make it a 38-17 game following six minite drive of their own. Psenicska capped his big day on his final drive of the game by finding Collier for a 24-yard touchdown on 3rd down and 6 to put the Bears up to the eventual final score of 44-17.

Ursinus held a sizable 411-172 advantage in total yards behind limiting the Greyhounds to just 71 yards on the ground. Senior linebacker Brett Gross once again paced the Bears defense with 11 tackles (three solo) and 2.0 TFL. Senior defensive lineman Ethan Belville wreaked havoc in the Moravian backfield all day and finished with four tackles, 3.5 being for loss, one sack, and one forced fumble. Senior defensive tackle Sean Leyden had a strong day with six tackles (one solo) and one sack.

The Bears will return to action on Saturday, October 29th as they will travel to face Gettysburg at 1 p.m.
