COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Junior forward
Alex Chalmers scored twice as the Ursinus College women's soccer defeated Muhlenberg 4-1 on Wednesday evening from Patterson Field.
With the win, the Bears improved to 6-6-4 on the season and 2-5-2 in Centennial Conference action. Meanwhile, the Mules fell to 2-13-1 overall and 1-8 in conference play.
Ursinus maintained possession over the first five minutes of action earning the first two shots of the contest, as Chalmers and junior
Ciara Rago earned scoring opportunities. Rago's shot came in the 5
th minute at the top of the box as she fired a low line drive shot at the left post, but Muhlenberg's Sara Percorelli made a diving save to keep the score tied. Casie Burke earned a scoring opportunity in the 13
th minute, but junior netminder
Kaela Frenchman was credited with a save.
In the 21
st minute, junior forward
Liv Morrow created an opportunity down the far sideline. Morrow sent a cross into the box in between two Bears. The cross went underneath the foot of Rago and past a Mules defender directly to Chalmers with space. Chalmers sent a low shot towards the right post past the Mules goalkeeper to give the Bears a 1-0 advantage. Moments later after a Muhlenberg foul, Ursinus was awarded a free kick from 25 yards out. Morgan Raley gave the Bears a 2-0 advantage as she fired a low line drive towards the far post and past the Mules defense.
In the 33
rd minute, each team traded shots as Muhlenberg's Anna May missed wide on her first attempt and had her second attempt saved by Frenchman for the Bears. With under six minutes remaining in the half, the Bears yet again added an insurance goal as sophomore
Emmy Sinnett collected her second goal of the season to give Ursinus a 3-0 lead. On a freekick, Raley sent a through ball down the far sideline to sophomore
Carlie Shiller. With plenty of space, Shiller sent a cross into the box and Sinnett's header was aimed perfectly towards the right post.
Each team traded shots over the opening ten minutes of the second as the Bears created three opportunities, but each was saved by Muhlenberg's Grace Hoffman. Muhlenberg added a goal in the 59
th minute to cut their deficit to two as Anna May scored her first goal of the season. In the 70
th minute, Frenchman and the defense continued their stellar play denying three Mules chances to keep a 3-1 lead. Chalmers added her second goal of the contest in the 86
th minute after a Bears corner kick. First-year Adrianna Careless played a quick ball to Chalmers who passed it back to Careless and she played a cross into the box. The Mules defense deflected the pass back to Chalmers and she sent an arching shot past the Mules defense and into the back of the net.
Frenchman earned the win in net for Ursinus collecting eight saves over 90 minutes of action, meanwhile Muhlenberg's Sara Percorelli earned three saves but was dealt the loss. The Bears held a 20-14 advantage in shots as Muhlenberg held a slight 6-4 edge in corner kick opportunities.
The Bears will return to action on Saturday to celebrate Senior day with their 2022 finale against McDaniel at 12pm.
