READING, Pa. – The Ursinus College men's wrestling team faced a 34-3 setback to No.12 Alvernia University on Tuesday afternoon.
With the loss, the Bears fall to 1-1 on the season, meanwhile the Golden Wolves improved to 4-1 overall.
"We wrestled well in sports but if we're to beat a team ranked 12
th in the country, we need to wrestle well for 7 minutes," Director of Wrestling
Joe Jamison said. "Unfortunately, we dropped a lot of winnable matches tonight. There are a lot of takeaways from today and we'll be ready when it counts. Hats off to Alvernia – they're a tough team and wrestled well."
In a rematch of last year's opening bout,
Terry Adams secured a 7-2 decision over Alvernia's Keito Shaw to give Ursinus an early 3-0 lead.
The Golden Wolves captured the momentum of the dual meet at 133lbs, as first-year
Michael Adams was narrowly defeated by Alvernia's Anthony Portillo 4-0. Alvernia earned their second straight decision at 141lbs as Avery Leonard defeated
Romeo Rodriguez 6-4.
The match of the night came at 149lbs as fireworks erupted between Alvernia's Chance Babb and Ursinus'
Dante Monaco. Babb entered the final period with an 8-3 lead and increased his lead to seven with a takedown midway through the final stanza. In the final 20 seconds of the match, Monaco reversed a cradle attempt from Babb and received a takedown and four back points to cut his deficit to one. Monaco cut Babb and took him down in the final seconds, but Alvernia was awarded a point for riding time for a 12-11 decision.
Alvernia's Robert Lawlor earned a major decision over
Wesley Tosto at 157lbs, and senior
Shawn Marchesano dropped a 6-0 decision to No.3 ranked Matthew Lackman.
At 174lbs,
Jackson Brandt dropped a tough 12-5 decision as Alvernia pushed the match score to 19-3. The Golden Wolves earned back-to-back pins at 197lbs and 285lbs as they cruised to a 34-3 match victory.
The Bears will return to action on December 2 for the New Standard Invitational hosted by York College.
