Men's Tennis Downed by No. 20 Johns Hopkins

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Ursinus men's tennis team was defeated 8-1 setback by No. 20 Johns Hopkins on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action.

 

With the loss, the Bears fell to 7-6 overall and 2-4 in Centennial Conference action. Meanwhile, the 20th-ranked Blue Jays improved to 10-1 overall and 2-1 in Cenennial action.

 

 

Johns Hopkins won all three of the doubles points to gain the early 3-0 lead in the match. Johns Hopkins' Ryan Hellinger and Alexander Kernagis defeated junior Noah Mandel and sophomore Ethan Yu 8-1 at No. 3 doubles before the duo of Daniel Ardila and Thomas Yu followed with an 8-2 triumph over sophomores Lars Jespersen and Will Oberholtzer at the No. 1 position. Bear sophomores Darby Rogers and Rob Ritchie battled before ultimately falling 8-4 to Marco Azar and Vishnu Joshi at No. 2 doubles.

 

 

In singles, the Blue Jays sealed the match by winning the first two matches. Andrew Tran bested Jespersen 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot before Brian Wang clinched the match at No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Oberholtzer. Ritchie recorded the Bears first point of the match with a thrilling 7-5, 7-6 win over Eric Burrer at No. 3 singles as he overcame 4-0 deficit in the second set to win in a tiebreaker. Mandel suffered a 6-0, 6-0 setback to Kernagis at No. 5 singles and Rogers suffered a tough 7-6, 6-2 loss to Nick Charanjiva at the No. 4 spot. Yu suffered a tough 1-6, 7-6, (10-6) loss to Karan Belday at No. 6 singles to close out the match.

 

 

 The Bears will return to action Friday, April 22nd and will travel to face Rutgers-Camden in non-conference action at 3:30 p.m.
