Men's Tennis Bested on Senior Day by Washington College

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus men's tennis team suffered an 8-1 setback to Washington College on Saturday afternoon at Perkiomen Valley High School in Centennial Conference action.

 

With the loss, the Bears fell to 7-4 overall and 2-2 in Centennial Conference action. Prior to the match, the Bears honored its lone senior, Simbarashe Kanjanda, as a part of senior day ceremonies. Meanwhile, the Shoremen improved to 8-4 overall and 3-0 in Centennial action.

 

Washington College took all three of the doubles points to gain momentum with a 3-0 lead in the match. Washington's Aaradith Ravichandran and Ryohei Kawai defeated junior Noah Mandel and sophomore Ethan Yu 8-1 at No. 3 doubles before the duo of Karl Hoegstedt and Andrew Smith soon followed with an 8-1 triumph over sophomores Lars Jespersen and Will Oberholtzer at the No. 1 position. Bear sophomores Darby Rogers and Rob Ritchie were edged 8-6 in a hard-fought battle against Landon Strober and Christian Gruyon.

 

 

In singles, the Shoremen won the first four matches to lock up the victory which started with Strober defeating Oberholtzer 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot. Gruyon clinched the match at No. 6 singles with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Kanjanda and Jespersen was downed 1-6, 2-6 by Hoegstedt at the No. 1 spot. Ritchie suffered a 4-6, 0-6 setback to Kawai at No. 3 singles and Rogers gained the lone point for the Bears with a 1-6, 6-4 (10-7) win over Andrew Province at the No. 4 spot. Yu suffered a tough 2-6, 6-4, (10-6) loss to  Ravichandran at No. 5 singles to close out the match.

 

 

 The Bears will return to action Tuesday, April 12th as they will host No. 28 Haverford in Centennial Conference action at 6:30 p.m.
