COLLEGEVILLE, PA. – The Ursinus College women's soccer team lost a heartbreaking 2-1 match against Montclair State University from Patterson Field on Saturday evening.
With the loss, the Bears fell to 2-1-1 on the season, meanwhile the Red Hawks of the NJAC improved to 5-0 overall.
Montclair State earned the first shot of the contest in the opening minutes as Kimberly Campbell shot was blocked by the Bears defense. The Red Hawks offense was in rhythm early on in the match, earning three corner kicks in the first 17 minutes but
Kaela Frenchman and the Bears stood tall stopping each opportunity. With eight minutes to play in the first half, the Bears had a free kick opportunity in front of their bench about 40 yards from the goal. Junior
Izzy Allocco sent a high pass towards the net, but the Red Hawks defense used a header to send back up the field. The header found junior
Hannah Brainsky about 20 yards out with space, she sent a right-footed shot to the bottom right corner of the net giving the Bears a 1-0 lead. Montclair State responded with a shot of their own in the final minute of the first half, but a save from Frenchman gave the Bears a 1-0 lead at halftime.
The Red Hawks continued the offensive pressure in the beginning of the second half, firing four shots on net, each being saved by Frechman and the Bears defense. The pressure paid off in the 72
nd minute as Montclair's Kerri Driscoll fired a shot from 30 yards out, connecting with the crossbar allowing the linesmen referee to signal a goal to tie the match a 1-1. With under two minutes remaining in the game, Kimberly Campbell for the Red Hawks fired a curling shot that Frenchman laid out and tipped. The tipped shot hit the post and rolled into the net giving the Red Hawks a 2-1 lead.
Ursinus turned up the offensive pressure in the final two minutes trying to create one last opportunity. First-year
Adriana Careless sent a back-spinning shot towards the net as Montclair's Haley Martin tipped the ball allowing it to spin freely in front the net. Just before two Bears arrived Martin leaped to save the ball from finding the net, giving the Red Hawks a 2-1 road victory.
The Red Hawks held a 22-5 shot advantage throughout the contest and an 8-2 edge in corner opportunities. Junior goalkeeper
Kaela Frenchman impressed throughout the evening earning eight saves while Montclair's Haley Martin earned the victory in net collecting two saves.
The Bears will look to bounce back as they will return to action on Saturday, September 17
th opening Centennial Conference action with Gettysburg College at 4pm.
