Women's Soccer Blanks Monarchs 3-0

COLLEGEVILLE, PA. – First-year Adriana Careless and sophomore Grace Senese netted their first career goals as the Ursinus College women's soccer team defeated King's College 3-0 on Wednesday evening.

With the victory, the Bears improve to 4-3-1 on the season, meanwhile the Monarchs fall to 6-1-2 overall.

Just minutes into the match, Senese earned the first shot of the evening for Ursinus but her shot sizzled high of the net. King's College answered with a shot of their own in the 9th minute, as Madelyn Reuter missed high to keep the score tied. In the 10th minute, Izzy Allocco was awarded a free kick after a foul on the Monarchs. Allocco's shot from forty yards out sailed right into the hands of King's Tara Bender for a save. In the 25th minute, junior goalkeeper Kaela Frenchman saved a deflected shot as King's Jenna Waldbillig had an opportunity from 15 yards away.

In the 42nd minute, Allocco jumped a Monarchs pass in the midfield and started a counterattack for the Bears. Allocco found a Bears forward on the far side of the pitch as she sent a through ball past the Monarchs defense finding first-year Alicia Page, King's netminder Bender made a great read deflecting the pass towards the midfield. The deflection found Careless as she fired a shot from 35 yards out onto the empty net giving the Bears a 1-0 lead at halftime.

Ursinus controlled much of the momentum and pace of play in the second half, firing three shots on goal in the opening seven minutes. The Bears finally broke through in the 69th minute as Alex Chalmers scored her first goal of the season. Chalmers made a move creating space along the far sideline and sent a shot on net that was tipped off the post and into the back of the net. Just three minutes later, the Bears would increase their lead again on the counterattack. First-year Kalli Roskos sent a cross into the box finding Ciara Rago. Rago's shot missed wide finding Roskos who she sent a pass back into the box past the Monarchs defense. Roskos pass found Senese wide open, and a beautiful left-footed shot hit off the post and into the back of the net.

The Bears defense and Kaela Frenchman played excellent throughout the contest, holding King's to just one shot on goal as Ursinus earned their fourth shutout of the season. Frenchman earned the win in net for the Bears earning one save, while King's goalie Tara Bender collected five saves. Ursinus held a 18-3 advantage in shots, while King's held a 5-0 edge in corner kick opportunities.

The Bears will return to action on Saturday as they travel to Washington College for a Centennial Conference matchup at 7pm.
