COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus women's basketball team dropped a 70-36 to Dickinson on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action in Helfferich Hall.
Sophomore
Chinwe Irondi recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 13 points and 15 rebounds. First-year
Madison Smith added 10 points and three rebounds for the Bears.
The first quarter featured back and forth action from the squads as neither team was able to get a lead by more as three points. Ursinus led for the first six minutes of the game before the Red Devils grabbed their first lead at 8-6 with 4:10 left in the first quarter. The lead changed hands two more times in the final four minutes and the Red Devils edged ahead 14-12 after one behind a layup with 40 seconds left in the first quarter. Junior
Kelly Grant tied the game back up in the opening minute at 14 and that would be the last time the Bears would be at least tied for the rest of the game. The Red Devils used a 12-2 run to take a 26-16 advantage at the 4:38-mark of the second quarter and extended their lead out to 30-18 at the half. Ursinus shot just 15.4 percent in the second quarter compared to the Red Devils at 50 percent.
Dickinson started strong in the second half and extended their lead out to as many as 18 points at 40-22 with 3:40 left in the third quarter. The Bears pulled within 15 points at 42-27 with 37 second left in the quarter following a pair of free throws, but the Red Devils got a basket as time expired to take a 44-27 lead into the fourth. The basket at the end of the third quarter kicked off a stretch of six-straight made baskets to open the fourth quarter for Dickinson as they pulled away to lock up the win.
The Bears shot 32.6 percent from the field (14-of-43) and just 7.1 percent (1-of-14) from three-point range. Ursinus went 7-of-12 (58.3%) from the free throw line and the rebounds were even at 28. Meanwhile, the Red Devils went a 56.9 percent (29-of-51) from the field behind going 76.9 percent in the fourth quarter. Dickinson went 33.3 percent (3-of-9) from three-point range and 69.2 percent (9-of-13) from the free throw line.
Mia Kolb led the Red Devils with a game-high 19 points and grabbed three rebounds and three steals while Mia Chapman added 11 points off the bench.
Ursinus has a week off before returning to action on Saturday, February 4th and will travel to face Gettysburg at 1:00 p.m.
