Men's Soccer Battles Haverford in CC Contest

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Ursinus College men's soccer team battled on Wednesday afternoon, but eventually fell to Haverford College, 2-0 from Swan Field.

With the loss Ursinus moves to 8-6-1 overall and 1-5-1 in Centennial Conference action. Meanwhile, the Fords improved to 5-3-7 on the season and 3-2-3 in conference play.

Haverford earned the first chance of the contest during the 3rd minute as a header from Max Mouer towards the top left corner of the net but was saved on a diving attempt by Ursinus junior goalkeeper Zach Matik. The Fords continued the offensive pressure recording four more shots over the next seven minutes, but the Bears defense turned each opportunity away to keep the contest scoreless. Haverford's Tomas Ascoli tallied a shot on goal during the 11th minute as some great touches in the midfield led to a shot from 30-yards away but directly into the gloves of Matik for his second save of the game. The Fords broke through in the 16th minute when Gabe Knopf sent a through ball past the Bears defense finding teammate Aidan Lacy whose shot connected off the far post and into the back of the net to give Haverford a 1-0 advantage. Ursinus quickly responded with a scoring opportunity of their own as senior Tommy Mollis' shot was deflected and saved by the Fords defense. Moments later after a foul just outside the box, Mollis sent a pass towards the back post, but it was deflected out of danger from the Fords defense. At the 32:49-mark, senior Harry Lorenc sent a shot on goal as Haverford's netminder Dylan Ioffreda was credited with the save. During the remaining minutes of the first half much of the battle consisted in the midfield as the Fords held a 1-0 advantage at the break.

Haverford quickly struck again during the opening minutes of the second half as Lacy assisted Thomas Vanni for his first goal of the season to extend their lead to two at the 54:06-mark. After a free kick from midfield, a deflected shot found Vanni with space in front of the net as his shot found the back of the net to make the score 2-0 Haverford. The Bears quickly responded with a trio of shots over the next two minutes but were unable to cut their deficit to one. Senior Joshua Coster nearly connected on a shot from about 40-yards out, but his shot deflected off the post and found Lorenc past the Fords defense. Lorenc's followed up with a shot but a diving save from Haverford's netminder kept the Bears off the board. Later in the second half, the Bears followed up with two more shots on goal but were unable to connect on the opportunities eventually falling 2-0.

The Fords held a 24-11 advantage in shots while the Bears finished with a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Haverford's Dylan Ioffreda earned the victory in goal behind a game-high six saves, while Matik was dealt the loss after recording two saves in 90 minutes of action.

The Bears will return to action on Saturday as they host Dickinson College to celebrate Senior Day at 1 p.m.
