Football Suffers Setback to No. 7/10 Johns Hopkins

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Ursinus football team dropped a 42-14 contest to No. 7/10 Johns Hopkins on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action.

Junior quarterback Jalen Bradford finished the day 17-of-35 for 217 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Classmate Justin Collier led the receivers with nine receptions for 124 yards and scored both Bears touchdowns in the contest.

After the teams traded three-and-outs to open the game, the Blue Jays took the initial 7-0 lead on their ensuing possession. A fumble on the kick return after the touchdown set Johns Hopkins up at the Ursinus 39 yard line and they needed seven plays to score and make it a 14-0 game at the 4:52 mark of the first quarter. However, a short kickoff set the Bears up with decent field position and they cut the Blue Jay lead down to seven when Collier snagged a three-yard touchdown pass from Bradford at the 2:40-mark of the first quarter.

After a Blue Jay touchdown in the final minute of the first quarter, Collier had his way with the Hopkins secondary again and snatched his second touchdown of the day from seven yards out at the 11:42-mark of the second quarter to make it a 21-14 game. Ursinus staved off a lengthy Blue Jay drive that ended in a missed field goal but an interception from Bradford on the first play of the ensuing drive set Johns Hopkins up at the Ursinus 2-yard line. Two plays later, Johns Hopkins punched it in to extend their lead to 28-14 with 7:14 left in the first half. The Blue Jays added one more touchdown on their next drive from a lengthy passing play to carry a 35-14 lead into the half.

Ursinus had their first two drives in the second half drive deep into Johns Hopkins territory but end with turnover on downs behind a pair of sacks on the decisive 4th down of each drive. The Blue Jays added one final touchdown in the early stages of the fourth quarter after an 11-play 70-yard drive.

Senior linebacker Brett Gross led the Bears with a game-high 10 tackles (five solo) and classmate Ryan Bodolus posted eight stops (seven solo) and two sacks to bring his Centennial Conference leading total to 11 sacks and 17.5 tackles for loss.

Tight end Will Leger caught three touchdowns for the Blue Jays on three receptions that totaled 88 yards. Running back Andrew Rich added a pair of touchdowns on the ground while quarterback Bay Harvey went 22-of-29 for 244 yards while tossing four touchdown passes.

The Bears return to action on Saturday, October 29th when they host McDaniel for their annual homecoming contest at 1:00 p.m.
